Climate change promotes natural disasters and extreme weather conditions, the consequences of which increasingly affect cultural institutions. Flood 2024 again proves that such damage events are usually no longer possible at local level alone. A cross-border networked infrastructure for the protection of cultural property with appropriate personnel and technical equipment is becoming increasingly important. In order to be better prepared for major damage events in Bavaria, leading cultural institutions join the Bavarian emergency association. First sign of the agreement the Directorate-General of the State Archives of Bavaria the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek the state office for non-governmental museums in Bavaria the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen the Bavarian National Museum Archive and Library of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising the archive of the archbishop Bamberg the Archaeological State Collection the Federal Archive for its facility Load balancing archive Bayreuth The Bavaria emergency association supplements the existing regional emergency alliances with a supra-regional level. So far, there are already active emergency alliances in Bavaria at the locations of all state archives, i.e. in Amberg-Sulzbach-Rosenberg, Augsburg, Bamberg, Coburg, Landshut, Munich, Nuremberg and Würzburg. Other local allies are found. Minister of State Markus Blume emphasised on the signing of the agreement: “Prevention, protection and networking are best achieved together: With the establishment of the Bavarian emergency association, cultural institutions from all over the Free State join forces to quickly and extensively protect our cultural treasures. At the heart of the composite is the provision and coordination of a special emergency container for the protection of cultural property. In emergency, expert experts from the association advise and accompany the fire brigade when using the container. Thus, hand-in-hand with the operational forces, a quick, safe and precise protection of our cultural treasures is guaranteed. ‘ In the event of a major damage event, the institutions, which are combined in the Bavarian emergency association, bundle their human, technical and technical resources in order to preserve irreplaceable cultural property from loss and destruction. The first 48 hours decide on the success of a first supply, after this time, mold formation is used in wet objects. Even after that, a recovery is still possible, but the more rapid action is done properly, the better. Objectives of the Bavarian emergency association are procurement and provision of required large equipment and regular training. In the event of damage, members of the association help with recovery and initial care, the subsequent further processing is not the task of the emergency network. For the Bavarian emergency association, as large as possible facilities should be obtained, which run their own workshops or regularly supervise their own large-scale projects in the field of conservation. In this way, the facilities have the necessary expertise in order to also initiate further operational forces in the appropriate handling of crops to be fermented or already havared. A broad distribution of competence was also central. In addition to archives and libraries, large museums are represented and an important competent representative of smaller museums is represented by the state office for non-governmental museums. Whether document, book, painting or sculpture, for any kind of cultural property are specialists on board. The Federal Government supports the 2021 regions affected by floods and heavy rain during the reconstruction and the cultural facilities located there in order to cope with damage. From the funds provided for this purpose, a total of ten emergency containers are purchased with equipment and materials for the protection of cultural goods and kept ready for nationwide use. The main objective of the 10 containers to be distributed over the federal territory is the creation of a networked emergency infrastructure cultural property protection, which can also be combined. For Bavaria is currently running Production of a special container according to the model of the unrolling container of the emergency composite Cologne which has already been proven in use. Starting in the middle of 2025, this roll-off container is ready for cultural goods protection at a logistically easily accessible location in the Munich area for the supra-regional retrieval via the emergency association Bayern. The coordinating body for the preservation of the written cultural goods (KEK) takes into account the emergency provision in its funding lines and supports, for example, the purchase of emergency boxes and other equipment or the preparation of emergency plans. 21.06.2022: Cooperation Agreement between the University of the Federal Armed Forces of Munich and the Directorate-General for State Archives of Bavaria signed

21. In June 2022, the President of the University of Bundeswehr Prof. Dr. Merith Niehuss, whose Vice President Prof. Dr. Uwe Borghoff and the Director-General of the State Archive Dr. Margit Ksoll-Marcon signed a cooperation agreement at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich. The aim is to co-operate the Institute of Software Technology and the datArena of the University of the Bundeswehr Munich with the state archives of Bavaria in data backup and long-term data storage. The contract includes the cooperation of the two institutions with the organization and support of student projects and internships in order to close students with forms, methods and instruments of archival information management, as well as to give insights into the field of archives and the challenges of digital long-term archiving. Focus: Recovering old records and long-term archiving The intention of the agreement is that both partners develop joint projects, scientific meetings and workshops. For this purpose, the stock of the Bavarian State Archives can be used for research purposes by students and lecturers of the Institute for Software Technology. Research projects as well as project or master's work are intended primarily to restore and interpret older data stocks of the Bavarian State Archives, document formats and digital long-term storage and long-term preservation. Software solutions that can be created in research and used for the purposes of archiving are released for use by the State Archives. “The cooperation with the state archives is of particular importance for the University of the Bundeswehr Munich and the work in the datArena. This gives our researchers access to authentic and historically valuable data material as well as close personal contacts to internationally identified experts of long-term digital archiving,” explains Prof. Dr. Borghoff. Dr. Ksoll-Marcon said: “Enge contacts to the Institute of Software Technology at the University of the Bundeswehr have existed for many years and are intensified by this cooperation. The aim is to make research data readable and usable and to further develop the necessary technologies." The datArena: A forum of encounter The signing of the cooperation agreement took place in the new premises of the datArena on the grounds of the University of the Bundeswehr Munich. The datArena is a teaching, research and exhibition centre that conveys between technical, cultural and social history and will also offer researchers, students and the public a forum for encounters. The datArena was founded jointly by Prof. Dr. Borghoff and John G. Zabulitzky. At present, a move on the grounds is completed. In addition to valuable, technology-historical, representative electronic computers, the datArena houses a software archive of international rank and one of the largest collections of historical digital media. Since the software and media can be used on functional devices from the respective era, historical software and digital documents can be brought back to life. Thus, datArena offers an excellent infrastructure for research in the field of digital long-term archiving and preservation of digital cultural heritage. In conjunction with the datArena, courses and internships of the Bayerische Archivschule will be organized and conducted in the future.

13th Archives Day “Old Home - New Home,” early March 2026

Every two years, the Association of German Archivists (VdA) calls for a nationwide “Archives Day.” Most events take place on the weekend of March 7-8, but some take place earlier. This year, Archives Day will focus on the theme of “Old homeland – new homeland,” but many other topics will also be covered. Among Bavaria's state archives, the Amberg State Archives (presentation already on March 4), the Bavarian Main State Archives, and the Coburg, Landshut, and Munich State Archives will be participating with events on Saturday, March 7. The Augsburg State Archives will take part in “Augsburg open” from May 7 to 10, 2026, and the Bamberg State Archives will hold an open house on June 12. 02.11.2021: Training for the third level of qualification of the training and science course, specialized focus on archives

On 2 November 2021, 13 candidates from the three-year preparatory service in the field of archiving started University of Applied Sciences in Bavaria. As part of their dual studies, the prospective graduate archivists will be taught in about two dozen subjects, ranging from German and Latin writing to archive management teaching, to the highly topical "Digital Archiving", which will teach craftsmen for their future profession. With three internship sections in different archives, the theoretically learned is transferred to practice. The Director-General of the State Archives, Dr. Margit Ksoll-Marcon, was pleased to see that, in addition to the six public participants, seven young people from municipal archives complete the training. “Not only in the light of upcoming retirements, there is still urgent need for committed and qualified young people, both at the state and at the local level. 22.-23.03.2019: 11. Bavarian Archive Day in Coburg - Bavarian Janus award to the Mayor of Augsburg Dr. Kurt Gribl

Archives, science and research have always been working closely together. In addition, archives understand themselves as service providers for the public and thus also for research. The digi-tal change today opens up new opportunities for cooperation on both sides, combined with new challenges. What are the ways in which the archives are to engage in cooperation with research? 15.01.2019: Introduction of Archive Director Dr. Christian Kruse as new head of the Bamberg State Archive

Tuesday, 15th In January 2019, Dr. Christian Kruse, Director General Dr. Margit Ksoll-Marcon, was officially introduced as Head of the State Archives. Ms. President of the Government Heidrun Piwernetz has spoken a greeting. Dr. Christian Kruse was effective from 1. December 2018 appointed Head of the Bamberg State Archives. He followed archive director a.D. Dr. Stefan Nöth, who has been the state archive since 1st. August 2006 and retired as of 31 August 2018. Christian Kruse, born in Kiel, studied history and German at the universities of Erlangen and Vienna. He received his doctorate in Erlangen with a work on “Franz Friedrich Anton von Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld 1750–1806”. After training as a scientific archivist at the Bayerische Archivschule, he worked from 1991 to 2002 in the Bayerischer Hauptstaatsarchiv and from 2002 to 2007 in the Staatsarchiv Augsburg and Nuremberg. From 2007 to 2008, he worked as a permanent representative of the Head of State Archives in Munich, from 2008 to 2018 he was responsible for archive building, stock conservation, publications and public relations in the Bavarian State Archives Directorate-General. Dr. Kruse represented the state archives of Bavaria in federal-counter-gremien. The state archive Bamberg can inaugurate a modern magazine building in the next few months. Networking in the region with archives, authorities, courts, educational institutions and schools is a central task that will be intensified.
