05.11.2019: Historical Missing Books in the Bavarian Main State Archive and the State Archive Munich

“Get away from the Inn on 27.1.76” or “taken up in Copenhagen on 11.11.75” – two fates of thousands of people from Bavaria who are reported missing every year at the police services. Most missing persons are found alive, individual cases end tragically. Unknown dead and unknown helpless people to register and identify is a difficult task of the police. These processes are coordinated in the field of personal identification of the Bayerische Landeskriminalamt. In August 2019, the Bayerische Landeskriminalamt handed over three large cartons with a total of 57 so-called missing books from 1926 to 1985 to the Bayerische Hauptstaatsarchiv. After a more precise analysis of their origin, the eleven older volumes from the period before 1945 were submitted to the State Archive Munich. These volumes come from a time when the Missing Books were still held centrally by the Munich police office for the whole of Bavaria. The State Archive Munich is responsible for its transmission. Thus, a central source with evidence of all persons missing in Bavaria, unknown dead and unknown helpless persons (VuT) from about 60 years is available for historical research. What was documented on paper in thick volumes by 1988 has been recorded electronically since then – these digital documents will also come to the Bayerische Hauptstaatsarchiv one day. The archiving of the missing books is an expression of the excellent cooperation of the Bavarian police authorities with the Bavarian state archives. Consciousness for the permanent preservation of historically valuable administrative documents shapes the contact between the police authorities and the competent archives. It is now the task of the Bayerischer Hauptstaatsarchiv and the Staatsarchiv München to develop the newly acquired missing books, to treat them conservatively and to make them accessible to interested researchers in accordance with legal requirements. If the National Criminal Office needs the one or the other band again, because all the last missing persons so far could still be clarified, there is the possibility of returning. Second life in book covers and file folders – a journey through time with parchment and paper waste

An exhibition by the Department of Archival and Library Science at the University of Public Service in Bavaria, curated by Amelie Knittel On display from February 10 to March 7, 2026, at the Bavarian Main State Archives. The reuse of used items is not a modern phenomenon: people have been recycling and upcycling since ancient times. In the 17th century, parchment was reused for envelopes, early printed materials were used as book spines, and after World War II, people often wrote on the back of already printed paper. The exhibition takes visitors on a brief journey through the various ways in which parchment and paper were reused in an administrative context and the curiosities that arose as a result. Around 20 exhibits from the Bavarian Main State Archives and the Munich State Archives illustrate in particular the nature of the reprocessing, the circumstances surrounding this process, and the contents of the items that were given a second life. 06.10.2021: Presentation of Dr. Klaus Rupprecht as new head of the Bamberg State Archive

On 5 October 2021, archive director Dr. Klaus Rupprecht became publicly a new head of the State Archives Bamberg presented. He took over this task as early as July 1, 2021 and followed archive director Dr. Christian Kruse, who moved to the State Archive Nuremberg as head of May 1, 2021. Dr. Christian Kruse led the Bamberg State Archive from 1 December 2018 to 30 April 2021. After studying history and German for the Magisterium at the Universities of Erlangen and Vienna, he received his doctorate in Erlangen with a work on “Franz Friedrich Anton von Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld 1750–1806”. He completed his training as a scientific archivist at the Bavarian Archive School in 1988 until 1991, after which he worked in the Bavarian Main State Archives, in the State Archives of Augsburg, Nuremberg and Munich and from 2008 to 2018 in the Directorate-General of the Bavarian State Archives. Dr. Klaus Rupprecht, a native of Upper Franconia, studied history, anglistics and social studies at the University of Bamberg for the Teaching Office of Gymnasium. He received his doctorate with a dissertation on the topic of “Ritterisches Fürstentruung in Franken. The history of Guttenberg in the late Middle Ages and at the beginning of the early modern period”. After his lecture on the scientific archivist at the Bavarian Archive School in 1993 to 1996, Klaus Rupprecht worked in the Bavarian Main State Archive in Munich, came to the Bamberg State Archives in 1997, where he was Deputy Head and Speaker for Disclosure and Stock Issues since 2000. Since 1 November 2016 he has been head of the state archive Würzburg. With his appointment to the head of the Bamberg State Archives, he returned to his roots. In recent years, the Bamberg State Archive has been able to inaugurate and obtain an additional, modern magazine construction. In the next few years, public relations and public relations will be a special focus. It is also considered particularly important to strengthen the significance of the Bamberg State Archive as a centre of regional historical research. In this respect, cooperation with the Upper Franconian universities, cultural institutions and historical associations is sought. The state archive Bamberg retains around 2.6 million archives in the amount of 26.3 km (as at the end of 2020). It is responsible for the transfer of all state authorities, courts and prosecutors of the middle and lower level in the administrative district of Oberfranken, but without those based in county and circular city of Coburg (the State Archive Coburg is responsible for this). The State Archives delivers the documents, official books, files and plans of the Hochstift and Domkapitels Bamberg as well as of the Bamberg monasteries and pens, the archives of the Markgraftum Brandenburg-Kulmbach-Bayreuth, the Franconian Empire and the rich Knights cantons Gebürg and Steigerwald. In addition, numerous nationally important nobility archives (e.g. Counts of Giech, Freelors of Guttenberg) as well as important personal estates and collections belong to the main areas of tradition. 29.06-30.10.2020: "The most burning of all social questions." Local housing policy between 1918 and 1954 in Munich, Nuremberg, Erlangen

On Monday, 29. June 2020, became the small exhibition in the Bavarian Main State Archive “The most burning of all social questions” Local housing policy between 1918 and 1954 in Munich, Nuremberg, Erlangen open. The exhibition was opened in the course of training in the preparatory service 2018/2020 for the entry into the 4th Qualification level of the field of education and science, specialist focus on archives, at the Bavarian Archive School. Dr. Thomas Gilgert, Johannes Hasselbeck and Andreas Schenker are the editors of the exhibition. Lack of housing and rising rents in many cities lead to the housing issue of many today as a new social issue or even as the social issue of the 21st. It is seen in the century. Concentrated housing also promotes the spread of diseases, as the Covid-19-Pandemie is currently devastating. These phenomena are not new. Already in the pre-modern era, not all people had a roof over their heads. At the latest since the explosion in the urban centers, which begins with industrialization and continues to take place today, supply and demand are mostly disparate. The small exhibition looks back at the local housing policy in three crucial political phases in Bavaria: the Weimar Republic, the National Socialism and the early post-war period. For each of these periods, a city which was of particular importance for Bavaria at the time as it was today and whose housing policy was thus also exemplary for others is taken out. The exhibition begins with Munich as the most populous place and Bavarian capital for the period of the Weimar Republic. It follows Nuremberg, the old industrial heart of Bavaria and special show stage of Nazi propaganda (cf. also Exponat 2.2 in the online finder MF 22: "Representation of state forest grounds for the establishment of a working settlement on the outskirts of Nuremberg"). In the post-war period, the exhibition focuses on Franconian achievements, until then a middle city with a Protestant-small-bourgeois character, which developed into an educational, industrial and prosperity centre after 1945. On the basis of these examples, two democracies and a totalitarian dictatorship, the structural features of which are also found in local housing policy, are dealt with consecutive but conceivable different temporal contexts: In the Munich of the Weimar Republic, the increased importance of public service provision becomes clear, the völkian blood and soil ideology of the NS regime manifests itself in its Nuremberg home and small settlements, and an essential factor of the earned lack of housing in the post-war period were the many refugees and displaced persons arriving there. On the other hand, there are specific local peculiarities of the three places: The conservative expression of Munich's urban policy is more traditional. The self-conception of Nuremberg as a “city of the Reichsparteitage” is reflected in the offensive appearance of Mayor Liebels. Erlangen’s urban structure, which remained largely undisturbed in the war, resulted in an unusually strong settlement of various groups, which now needed a new home. With this concept, the exhibition wants to sharpen the view of the questions of the present by illustrating different reactions that the phenomenon of housing shortages had in three different contexts. The small exhibition combines about 40 exhibits, mainly from the municipal archives Nuremberg, Munich, Erlangen and the Bavarian Main State Archive. Revolution and Räterepubliken in Bavaria 1918/19

100. Birthday of the Free State presented bavaricon the exciting and dramatic history of its beginnings in a virtual exhibition. Five chronological sections and a level of deepening bring you closer to the Revolutionary Years 1918/19. The focus is on the events in the capital Munich, which were decisive for all Bavaria. In addition, the various developments are included in ten other locations of Altbayerns, Frankens and Schwabens. 90 high-calibre exhibits from archives, libraries and museums show you the decisive changes and changes of this time – with all their breakthrough achievements, but also the problematic accompanying phenomena and consequences. 22.10.-05.01.2021: THE BURG BRENNT! The Landshut disaster of 21.10.1961

In the night from 20. to 21. In October 1961, a fire devastated the castle Trausnitz over Landshut and the state archive Landshut, which was then housed there. The 60th anniversary State Archive Landshut in cooperation with the Bavarian administration of the state castles, gardens and lakes and the volunteer fire brigade Landshut in the exhibition “DIE BURG BRENNT! The Landshuter catastrophe of 21.10.1961” deals with the causes and consequences of the fire. Exhibition and accompanying catalogue describe the fire and its legal workup. In the flames there were essential cultural goods, fire-causing damages and gaps in unique archives of the State Archives and destroyed equipment and architecture of the "Fürstenbau" Castle of Trausnitz. The efforts of the state archives and the lock administration to remedy the damage continue to this day. Especially the former artistic design of the castle, which has almost disappeared from the memory of the Landshut population, is recalled by old photographs and a few relics borrowed from the brandy. These include the colourful, fearful room halls from Spätrenaissance and Barock and the magnificent "Absteigquartier" King Ludwigs II from the 1870s. The Exhibition "DIE BURG BRENNT! 15.01.2019: Introduction of Archive Director Dr. Christian Kruse as new head of the Bamberg State Archive

Tuesday, 15th In January 2019, Dr. Christian Kruse, Director General Dr. Margit Ksoll-Marcon, was officially introduced as Head of the State Archives. Ms. President of the Government Heidrun Piwernetz has spoken a greeting. Dr. Christian Kruse was effective from 1. December 2018 appointed Head of the Bamberg State Archives. He followed archive director a.D. Dr. Stefan Nöth, who has been the state archive since 1st. August 2006 and retired as of 31 August 2018. Christian Kruse, born in Kiel, studied history and German at the universities of Erlangen and Vienna. He received his doctorate in Erlangen with a work on “Franz Friedrich Anton von Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld 1750–1806”. After training as a scientific archivist at the Bayerische Archivschule, he worked from 1991 to 2002 in the Bayerischer Hauptstaatsarchiv and from 2002 to 2007 in the Staatsarchiv Augsburg and Nuremberg. From 2007 to 2008, he worked as a permanent representative of the Head of State Archives in Munich, from 2008 to 2018 he was responsible for archive building, stock conservation, publications and public relations in the Bavarian State Archives Directorate-General. Dr. Kruse represented the state archives of Bavaria in federal-counter-gremien. The state archive Bamberg can inaugurate a modern magazine building in the next few months. Networking in the region with archives, authorities, courts, educational institutions and schools is a central task that will be intensified.

21.03.-20.05.2022: From the national park to the bee colony. 50 years Ministry of the Environment in Bavaria.

The small exhibition “From the National Park to the Beevolksbegehren” shows the diversity of the tradition of the environment stored in the Bavarian Main State Archive. 50 years of the Ministry of the Environment in Bavaria”, which until 20. May 2022 can be seen in the Bavarian Main State Archive. The Bavarian Ministry of the Environment was established in the European Nature Conservation Year 1970 by decision of the Bavarian Landtag. Since then, the environmental policy field has developed into a political-social long-term task with the aim of creating as much as possible equivalent and good living conditions throughout Bavaria. This includes a lively and healthy environment. Priorities in the history of the Ministry of the Environment were early environmental initiatives and educational measures, legislative initiatives such as the inclusion of environmental protection as a state goal in the Bavarian Constitution and the Bavarian Environmental Pact in 1995. There were also challenges such as environmental scandals, protests against the reprocessing plant in Wackersdorf, citizens' initiatives and popular desires. They also demonstrate the emergence of a new political culture of resistance and direct democracy.
