28.09.2022-08.01.2022: The Prince Bishop moves into town - The beginnings of the Würzburg Residence 300 years ago

The 300. Jubilee of the laying of the foundation stone of the Würzburger Residenz on 22. May 1720 dedicate State Archive Würzburg and Bavarian administration of state castles, gardens and lakes a small exhibition. The exhibition, which was planned for the anniversary year 2020, had to be postponed several times due to the Corona-Pandemie and can therefore be seen with two years delay in the rooms of the Würzburg residence. The Würzburg residence is a building of European rank. As a baroque professional building from a cast, it is a world cultural heritage.

Its magnificent equipment came from the need for representation, the consciousness of power and the "Baufieber" of the Würzburger Fürstbischöfe from Schönborn. Thanks to their contacts, the most influential architects of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation planned and worked on the construction of the residence, among them Johann Dientzenhofer and the previously unknown engineering officer Balthasar Neumann. The foundation stone laying on 22 May 1720 is the starting point of the exhibition on building history. The stations illuminate the planning and construction of the residence until its inauguration. The artists, architects and craftsmen involved in the construction are presented more closely. Another striking light is directed at the polite life in Würzburg according to the reference of the residence through the court state.

30 exhibits from the collections of the state archive Würzburg as well as some lenders from other facilities (Museum für Franken, Staatsarchiv Bamberg). The Bavarian administration of the state castles, gardens and lakes participates with several large portrait paintings by prince bishops from Schönborn.

02.11.2021: Training for the third level of qualification of the training and science course, specialized focus on archives

On 2 November 2021, 13 candidates from the three-year preparatory service in the field of archiving started University of Applied Sciences in Bavaria. As part of their dual studies, the prospective graduate archivists will be taught in about two dozen subjects, ranging from German and Latin writing to archive management teaching, to the highly topical "Digital Archiving", which will teach craftsmen for their future profession. With three internship sections in different archives, the theoretically learned is transferred to practice. The Director-General of the State Archives, Dr. Margit Ksoll-Marcon, was pleased to see that, in addition to the six public participants, seven young people from municipal archives complete the training. “Not only in the light of upcoming retirements, there is still urgent need for committed and qualified young people, both at the state and at the local level. 15.01.2019: Introduction of Archive Director Dr. Christian Kruse as new head of the Bamberg State Archive

Tuesday, 15th In January 2019, Dr. Christian Kruse, Director General Dr. Margit Ksoll-Marcon, was officially introduced as Head of the State Archives. Ms. President of the Government Heidrun Piwernetz has spoken a greeting. Dr. Christian Kruse was effective from 1. December 2018 appointed Head of the Bamberg State Archives. He followed archive director a.D. Dr. Stefan Nöth, who has been the state archive since 1st. August 2006 and retired as of 31 August 2018. Christian Kruse, born in Kiel, studied history and German at the universities of Erlangen and Vienna. He received his doctorate in Erlangen with a work on “Franz Friedrich Anton von Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld 1750–1806”. After training as a scientific archivist at the Bayerische Archivschule, he worked from 1991 to 2002 in the Bayerischer Hauptstaatsarchiv and from 2002 to 2007 in the Staatsarchiv Augsburg and Nuremberg. From 2007 to 2008, he worked as a permanent representative of the Head of State Archives in Munich, from 2008 to 2018 he was responsible for archive building, stock conservation, publications and public relations in the Bavarian State Archives Directorate-General. Dr. Kruse represented the state archives of Bavaria in federal-counter-gremien. The state archive Bamberg can inaugurate a modern magazine building in the next few months. Networking in the region with archives, authorities, courts, educational institutions and schools is a central task that will be intensified.

14.3.-4.4.2023: Cannon bells. Bell seizure and restoration in Bavaria 1917–1922

The 14th. March 2023 became the small exhibition “Glocken zu Kanonen. Bell seizure and restoration in Bavaria 1917–1922” opened in the Bavarian Main State Archive. The exhibition was developed as part of the current archiving training for the 3rd level of qualifications at the University of Applied Sciences in Bavaria (HföD). Bells have shaped our everyday life as a clock generator for centuries. In their ornamental and sound art, they testify not only to the worship of God and the saints, but also to the craftsmen of their founders. In the First World War, about one third of the Bavarian bells were crushed and melted to cover the metal requirements of the armaments industry. Despite these massive losses, the “Glockenland Bayern” succeeded better than other countries of the German Reich to preserve its bell stock as far as possible and in particular to preserve historical bells from destruction. The exhibition is dedicated to the processes and actors of bell events during the First World War in Bavaria. Finally, the question of state compensation or restoration of bells after the end of the war. 21.01.2020: Bavaria and Poland in the first half of 20. Century. Strokes on an alternating relationship

Tuesday, 21. January 2020, the small exhibition “Bayern and Poland” was held in the first half of the 20th century in the Bavarian State Archives Directorate-General. Century. Opened to an interchangeable relationship. The exhibition was opened in the course of training in the preparatory service 2018/2020 for the entry into the 4th Qualification level of the field of education and science, specialist focus on archives, at the Bavarian Archive School. Dr. Katharina Aubele, Dr. Julia Oberst and Dr. Hubert Seliger are responsible for the exhibition. In addition to their position in the middle of Europe, Bavaria and Poland have two particularities: both countries have undergone a change in state development and both have not been seldom playing ball of the Great Powers In addition, in the first half of the 20. numerous connections and interfaces between Bavaria and Poland, which are illuminated in more detail in the small exhibition. The tradition of the Bavarian ministries stored in the Bavarian Main State Archives as well as the tradition of the sub- and central authorities and the courts in the state archives should be highlighted. 25.04.2022: Archiving agreement between the Landesbund für Vogelschutz and the Bayerischer Hauptstaatsarchiv

25. In April 2022, Dr. Bernhard Grau, Director of the Main State Archives and Dr. Norbert Schäffer, Chairman of the Bavarian Association for Bird Protection (LBV), signed an archiving agreement. The agreement regulates the future transfer of the LBV association to the Bayerische Hauptstaatsarchiv. The Landesbund für Vogelschutz is one of the oldest and most important environmental associations in Bavaria. His tradition dates back to the founding year 1909. The new acquisition focus of the Bavarian Main State Archives includes sources from the field of natural, environmental and climate protection as well as civic engagement. The state archives of Bavaria also take over non-governmental and private archives and collections. The written transmission of the Landesbund für Vogelschutz substantially complements the stocks already stored in the Bayerische Hauptstaatsarchiv for environmental and climate protection. The largest group of private traditions form the estates of important personalities: Prof. Dr. Hubert Weiger (born in 1947), forest scientist, long-term chairman and current honorary chairman of BUND Naturschutz in Bayern e.V., BUND and member of the Coal Commission of the Federal Government and many other bodies. He will be present at the signing of the agreement. Dr. Hans Bibelriether (born 1933), Förster, long-term director of the first German National Park “Bayerischer Wald” and a recognized expert in the national park movement. Sepp Daxenberger (1962–2010), Mayor and Minister of State of Bündnis 90/The Greens and their co-country chairman. Ruth Paulig (born 1949), co-founder of the Greens in Bavaria, Minister of State of Bündnis 90/The Greens and their co-country chairman. Dr. Sepp Dürr (born 1953), Chief of State of Bündnis 90/The Greens and their Co-President. Prof. Dr. Klaus Buchner (born in 1941), physicist, Federal Chairman and MEP of the ÖDP. Dr. Max Stiferl (1932–1998), 1970–1977 first Bavarian Minister of the Environment, 1977–1988 Minister of Finance, 1988–1993 Bavarian Prime Minister. Alfred Dick (1927–2005), 1977–1990 Bavarian Environment Minister. The small exhibition “From the National Park to the Beevolksbegehren” shows the diversity of the tradition of the environment stored in the Bavarian Main State Archive. 50 years of the Ministry of the Environment in Bavaria”, which until 20. May 2022 can be seen in the Bavarian Main State Archive. The Bavarian Ministry of the Environment was established in the European Nature Conservation Year 1970 by decision of the Bavarian Landtag. Since then, the environmental policy field has developed into a political-social long-term task with the aim of creating as much as possible equivalent and good living conditions throughout Bavaria. This includes a lively and healthy environment. Priorities in the history of the Ministry of the Environment were early environmental initiatives and educational measures, legislative initiatives such as the inclusion of environmental protection as a state goal in the Bavarian Constitution and the Bavarian Environmental Pact in 1995. There were also challenges such as environmental scandals, protests against the reprocessing plant in Wackersdorf, citizens' initiatives and popular desires. They also demonstrate the emergence of a new political culture of resistance and direct democracy. In about 40 exhibits, the small exhibition will focus on the institutionalization of environmental protection and environmental policy in Bavaria. 06.10.2021: Presentation of Dr. Klaus Rupprecht as new head of the Bamberg State Archive

On 5 October 2021, archive director Dr. Klaus Rupprecht became publicly a new head of the State Archives Bamberg presented. He took over this task as early as July 1, 2021 and followed archive director Dr. Christian Kruse, who moved to the State Archive Nuremberg as head of May 1, 2021. Dr. Christian Kruse led the Bamberg State Archive from 1 December 2018 to 30 April 2021. After studying history and German for the Magisterium at the Universities of Erlangen and Vienna, he received his doctorate in Erlangen with a work on “Franz Friedrich Anton von Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld 1750–1806”. He completed his training as a scientific archivist at the Bavarian Archive School in 1988 until 1991, after which he worked in the Bavarian Main State Archives, in the State Archives of Augsburg, Nuremberg and Munich and from 2008 to 2018 in the Directorate-General of the Bavarian State Archives. Dr. Klaus Rupprecht, a native of Upper Franconia, studied history, anglistics and social studies at the University of Bamberg for the Teaching Office of Gymnasium. He received his doctorate with a dissertation on the topic of “Ritterisches Fürstentruung in Franken. The history of Guttenberg in the late Middle Ages and at the beginning of the early modern period”. After his lecture on the scientific archivist at the Bavarian Archive School in 1993 to 1996, Klaus Rupprecht worked in the Bavarian Main State Archive in Munich, came to the Bamberg State Archives in 1997, where he was Deputy Head and Speaker for Disclosure and Stock Issues since 2000. Since 1 November 2016 he has been head of the state archive Würzburg. With his appointment to the head of the Bamberg State Archives, he returned to his roots. In recent years, the Bamberg State Archive has been able to inaugurate and obtain an additional, modern magazine construction. In addition, numerous nationally important nobility archives (e.g. Counts of Giech, Freelors of Guttenberg) as well as important personal estates and collections belong to the main areas of tradition. 11.10.2021: 100. Day of death King Ludwig III.

100. King Ludwigs III dedicate the Bavarian State Archives to the last Bavarian king Online presentation. Written considerations of the king’s to a European “federation of states” which have not yet been disregarded by research are presented. The unlocking took place on Monday, 11. October 2021 on the occasion of a visit by the Head of the Bavarian State Chancellery, Minister of State Dr. Florian Herrmann, MdL, and SKH Herzog Franz von Bayern in the Bavarian Main State Archive. The First World War and the November Revolution in 1918 led to the end of the monarchy in Bavaria. The last Bavarian King Ludwig III fled from Munich on 7 November 1918. He spent the rest of his life at Schloss Wildenwart im Chiemgau, Austria, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Hungary. Ludwig III died 76 years on 18th. October 1921 at Nádasdy Castle in Sárvár in Hungary. The state archives of Bavaria preserve diverse testimonies from the life of the last monarch. Some selected special pieces from the Bavarian State Archive, Department III Secret Home Archive and Department V Estates and Collections and State Archive Munich are presented in an online presentation. A first-hand shirt, baptism and birth certificate, will and death-matric entry as well as photos provide an insight into the life-reality of the prince and later monarchs. From research to Ludwig III. a document which was found in his desk in Sárvár after the death of the king has not been honoured. It opens up a new look at the monarchs named “Millibauer” in the Bavarian population due to their passion for agriculture. "The German Reparation"

How did the Federal Republic of Germany compensate for the victims of unprecedented NS crimes? How was robbed property returned? And are committed crimes even “make good again”? These and other questions are discussed in the new, three-part podcast “The German Reparation”, which is now available online. In three episodes, central aspects of restitution such as restitution and compensation are at the heart of NS persecuters, as well as dealing with the so-called “forgotten victims” using the example of Sinti and Roma. Experts from science and society, along with podcast host Nora Hespers, also on the basis of historical documents from the Federal Archives, illuminate the backgrounds of reparation. The podcast appears in a German and English version. “The German Reparation” was created on behalf of the Federal Archive for the online theme portal “Reparation of National Socialist Unright”. Since 2022, the thematic portal initiated by the Federal Ministry of Finance and designed by the Federal Archives has been providing central access to millions of files of the German reparation policy and is continually being developed into a comprehensive search and information site which, in addition to archive contents, also offers background information, podcasts and research aids. The theme portal is implemented together with the Landesarchiv Baden-Württemberg, the Leibniz-Institut FIZ Karlsruhe and the portal Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek. The new podcast will be published on the 18th anniversary of the ratification of the Luxembourg Agreement on the so-called ‘Reparation of National Socialist Unright’. March 1953. In this agreement, the Federal Republic took responsibility to the State of Israel for the crimes committed in Nazism, especially to Jews. In the first podcast sequence “A question of property – between robbery and law” the refund of stolen property is at the centre of attention. Historian Jürgen Lillteicher (Director of the Allied Museum Berlin) talks about the start of reparation. Jurist Benjamin Lahusen (University of Frankfurt an der Oder) takes a look at the court halls at that time, and the provenance researchers Susanne Kiel and Kathrin Kleibl (LostLift database) report on the handling of the moved goods persecuted who had been confiscated in ports during war outbreak. The second sequence “A question of the territory – the view to the west” looks at the compensation of Nazis in Western Europe. Historian Tim Geiger (Institut für Zeitgeschichte München-Berlin) reports on the foreign policy history of reparation, and Nicole Immler (University of Humanistic Studies in Utrecht) explains how reparation was carried out abroad. Britta Weizenegger (Landesamts für Finanz Rheinland-Pfalz) also reports how a reparation office works today. In the third episode “Camp for Recognition” is about the reparation for the Sinti and Roma persecuted in the NS period. 24.2.-26.5.2023: 1623. Bavaria will be the princess

On Thursday 23rd February 2023, was the small exhibition “1623” in the Bavarian Main State Archive. Bavaria is opening up Kurfürstentum. The award of the Kurwürde to Herzog Maximilian I. von Bayern 400 years ago, on 25. February 1623, was the result of difficult negotiations and a compromise: The Bavarian Duke was only for his person, not for his whole house. In a secret supplementary agreement, Emperor Ferdinand II confirmed the inheritance of the Bavarian Wittelsbacher. The origins of the Bavarian pursuit after this ranking date back to the late middle age. In the house contract of Pavia, in 1329 between the Bavarian and the Celtic line of the Wittelsbacher, an alternating exercise of the Kurwürde had been agreed; the Golden Bull of 1356 tied the Kurwürde to the Celtic territory. On 8 October 1619, Duke Maximilian I of Bavaria and Emperor Ferdinand II concluded the Munich Treaty. A subsidiary agreement to this agreement marks the beginning of the efforts of Maximilians to transfer the Palatinate Kurwürde to Bavaria. After Friedrichs V's battle from the Palatinate 1621, a secret stretching was first carried out, and in 1623 the transfer of the Kurwürde to life time was finally carried out. Only the Westphalian peace in 1648, which ended the Thirty Years War, confirmed the Kurwürde for Bavaria. The small exhibition explains the most important stages of the ascent of Bavaria to the Kurfürstentum and the taught discussions that were held in the courts involved. The exhibition will be seen in other state archives during the course of 2023 and was therefore planned as a flexible presentation on roll-ups.
