06.10.2021: Presentation of Dr. Klaus Rupprecht as new head of the Bamberg State Archive

On 5 October 2021, archive director Dr. Klaus Rupprecht became publicly a new head of the State Archives Bamberg presented. He took over this task as early as July 1, 2021 and followed archive director Dr. Christian Kruse, who moved to the State Archive Nuremberg as head of May 1, 2021.

Dr. Christian Kruse led the Bamberg State Archive from 1 December 2018 to 30 April 2021. After studying history and German for the Magisterium at the Universities of Erlangen and Vienna, he received his doctorate in Erlangen with a work on “Franz Friedrich Anton von Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld 1750–1806”. He completed his training as a scientific archivist at the Bavarian Archive School in 1988 until 1991, after which he worked in the Bavarian Main State Archives, in the State Archives of Augsburg, Nuremberg and Munich and from 2008 to 2018 in the Directorate-General of the Bavarian State Archives.

Dr. Klaus Rupprecht, a native of Upper Franconia, studied history, anglistics and social studies at the University of Bamberg for the Teaching Office of Gymnasium. He received his doctorate with a dissertation on the topic of “Ritterisches Fürstentruung in Franken. The history of Guttenberg in the late Middle Ages and at the beginning of the early modern period”. After his lecture on the scientific archivist at the Bavarian Archive School in 1993 to 1996, Klaus Rupprecht worked in the Bavarian Main State Archive in Munich, came to the Bamberg State Archives in 1997, where he was Deputy Head and Speaker for Disclosure and Stock Issues since 2000. Since 1 November 2016 he has been head of the state archive Würzburg. With his appointment to the head of the Bamberg State Archives, he returned to his roots.

In recent years, the Bamberg State Archive has been able to inaugurate and obtain an additional, modern magazine construction. In the next few years, public relations and public relations will be a special focus. It is also considered particularly important to strengthen the significance of the Bamberg State Archive as a centre of regional historical research. In this respect, cooperation with the Upper Franconian universities, cultural institutions and historical associations is sought.

The state archive Bamberg retains around 2.6 million archives in the amount of 26.3 km (as at the end of 2020). It is responsible for the transfer of all state authorities, courts and prosecutors of the middle and lower level in the administrative district of Oberfranken, but without those based in county and circular city of Coburg (the State Archive Coburg is responsible for this). The State Archives delivers the documents, official books, files and plans of the Hochstift and Domkapitels Bamberg as well as of the Bamberg monasteries and pens, the archives of the Markgraftum Brandenburg-Kulmbach-Bayreuth, the Franconian Empire and the rich Knights cantons Gebürg and Steigerwald. In addition, numerous nationally important nobility archives (e.g. Counts of Giech, Freelors of Guttenberg) as well as important personal estates and collections belong to the main areas of tradition.

22.01.2020: "Grund und Boden – highly estimated. The floor estimate in the Oberpfalz – from analog to digital" - exhibition at the Staatsarchiv Amberg

Wednesday, 22. January 2020, the small exhibition “Grund und Boden – was highly appreciated in the Amberg State Archive. The soil estimate in the Oberpfalz – from analog to digital” opens. The exhibition is a cooperation project of the Amberg State Archives with the Office for Digitization, Broadband and Survey Amberg and the Weiden Finance Office. What is a field or a meadow worth? What's the ground? How do climate and water conditions shape? Answers to these questions arise from the soil estimate. The soil estimate is an inventory of agricultural soils according to the nature of their use and their natural viability. It is used to tax agricultural assets, but it is also important as a basis for determining value in land transport and rural development, land protection and land information systems. The exhibition with about 60 exhibits traces the history of soil estimation from its beginnings in the 1930s to the present and presents its organization and execution yesterday and today. Estimation cards and estimates books, which have only recently been submitted to the Amberg State Archive, documents, practical instructions, photos, technical equipment and soil samples, are shown. A fair distribution of the loads according to ownership and economic power has always been a reason for the tax on land and land. In addition, the exhibition therefore illustrates the prehistory: possessions and tax books from the Middle Ages and early modern times as well as cataster documents from the 19th century. Centuries give an insight into the tax assessment before the soil estimate. Hand-drawn cards from the 17th and 18th Century conveys an optical impression of landscapes in pre-industrial time. In addition to the documentation of the estimation results on paper, the modern digital mode of operation of the soil estimate is explained and the processing of the geodata in ALKIS as well as its evaluation possibilities via the Geoportal Bayern is demonstrated. This means that the floor estimate is not only placed in the larger frames of the history of the tax system, but also a sheet is beaten by the analogue to the digital geodata management. The implementation of the soil estimate is the task of the financial authorities which collect the results in estimation cards and estimation books and forward them to the survey management. 25.07.2022: Agreement for Mutual Support of Würzburg Archives Signed in Emergency

Director-General of the State Archives, Dr. Margit Ksoll-Marcon, the General Vicar of the Diocese of Würzburg, Dr. Jürgen Vorndran, the Cultural and Tourist Office of the City of Würzburg, Mr Achim Könneke, the Head of the Archives of the Julius-Maximilians-University of Würzburg, Dr. Marcus Holtz, signed on 25. July 2022 the agreement on mutual support for Würzburg archives in emergencies (“Notfallverbund Würzburg”). For the hopefully never-ending emergency, the institutions provide mutual support to bundle resources and to ensure faster and more effective recovery and initial supply of the affected archives, books and exhibits. For the institutions involved, the protection of the cultural goods they hold against fire, water, external violence or other unpredictable events is one of the most important tasks. The past has shown that the staff of the individual institutions are often overwhelmed without external assistance, which has shown impressively large disasters such as the Elbhochwasser 2002, the fire in the Weimar Anna-Amalia-Bibliothek 2004 or the collapse of the historical archive of the city of Cologne 2009. The Würzburg emergency association, established by the signing of this agreement, expressly invites the representatives of other cultural institutions in the Würzburg district to cooperate in the future. With the establishment of the emergency association Würzburg, the state archives of Bavaria have come a big step closer to their goal of establishing an emergency network at each archive location. Only the state archive Coburg is not yet integrated. Allies include Würzburg in Augsburg, Munich, Amberg-Sulzbach-Rosenberg, Bamberg, Nuremberg and Landshut. He has this task as of 1. May 2021, followed by Ltd. Archive Director Prof. Dr. Peter Fleischmann, who was appointed 31. January 2021 retired. Prof. Dr. Fleischmann led this State Archive Nuremberg since 1 December 2012 and returned to stations in the state archive Augsburg and the state archive Munich – in both state archives he had the lead inne – to the state archive in which his professional activity began after his training at the Bayerische Archivschule. Born in Kiel Dr. Christian Kruse, he studied history and German at the universities of Erlangen and Vienna for the Magisterium at Gymnasium. He received his doctorate in Erlangen with a doctorate on “Franz Friedrich Anton von Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld 1750–1806”. He completed his lecture on the scientific archivist at the Bavarian Archive School in 1988 until 1991, after which he worked in the Bavarian Main State Archives, in the state archives of Augsburg, Nuremberg and Munich and from 2008 to 2018 in the General Department of the State Archives of Bavaria. From 1 December 2018 to 30 In April 2021 he led the Bamberg State Archive. 09.11.2019: "Der Reichswald - Holz für Nürnberg und seine Dorf" - Exhibition at the Staatsarchiv Nürnberg

The State Archive Nuremberg shows from 9 November to 20 December 2019 the exhibition “The Nuremberg Reichswald – Wood for Nuremberg and its villages”. The exhibition was prepared by the State Archive Nuremberg together with the Franconian Freilandmuseum Bad Windsheim. Wood as an important and renewable raw material was already significant in the Middle Ages. 14th and 15th The city of Nuremberg secured the rights to the large forests around the city. Two “forest offices” were responsible for the administration, which controlled the wood consumption of the subjects. Not only the firewood cover was regulated, but also timber had to be applied. To save wood, more stone was used for building. The written delivery of the forest offices Lorenzi and Sebaldi in the state archive Nuremberg includes a total of 83 shelves. In the documents there are around 5,300 mostly coloured construction plans of farmhouses, stables and barns, fences, mills and furnaces from the 16th to the end of the 18th century. The plans document the appearance and change of villages, mansions and mills in the “Old Landscape”. 08.04.2019: "Revolution – The transition from the monarchy to the Republic in the Würzburg 1918/19" - joint exhibition of the State Archives and City Archives Würzburg

A hundred years ago a revolution in Bavaria ended the monarchy. Some revolutionaries tried to establish a socialist rebel audience. In Würzburg, councillorship was particularly noticeable. At the beginning of April 1919, the Würzburg residence, at the time as it is now the headquarters of the State Archives, was the venue of the twelve-member Revolutionary Action Committee (RAA) and thus the centre of the revolutionary event. This three-day domination in the residence from 7 to 9 April 1919 is the focus of the exhibition on time. The exhibition will include the logbook of the Action Committee delivered in an act of the Prosecutor's Office, as well as a variety of posters and leaflets. With posters and leaflets, the revolutionaries tried to control the mood in the city and to inform the population about the events. In view of contradictory instructions of the Munich councils and the Bamberger Exile government was often insulted outside the larger cities, showing files from the under-French state council offices. After three days, the Würzburger Räterepublik was militaryly terminated by an association of soldiers, students and citizens. The main players of the Würzburger Räterepublik were sentenced to the Landgericht Würzburg (Local Court). From now on, communists and Spartakists were considered the main drivers of young democracy. In the NS period, many followers of the sub-French epublics and their family members were monitored and persecuted, as the files of the Gestapostelle Würzburg document the members of the RAA chair Georg Friedrich Hornung. The exhibition was prepared by the State Archive Würzburg together with the City Archive Würzburg and was already on display in the City Archive in November 2018. It is now shown in the state archive in the Würzburg residence – extended by original documents from the collections of the state archive Würzburg. 15.09.2022: Digitization program NEUSTART CULTURE - Alpenkorps

With its own digitalization project, the Bavarian State Archives participate in NEUSTART CULTURE>>, in which the German Digital Library is also supported. The collection “Alpenkorps” of the department IV (war archive) of the Bavarian Main State Archive was selected. Not only because the “Kommando des Alpenkorps” briefly resided in the premises used today by the departments III and V of the Bavarian Main State Archive in 1915, this inventory is of particular importance for the Bavarian military history. In the spring of 2015, the Alpine Corps was the subject of a teaching exhibition by the Bavarian State Archives. The exhibition catalogue is ANNEX free of charge. When it was set up on the occasion of the war in Italy in 1915, the Alpine Corps was a new special military unit, since until that time the German Empire had no troops for the mountain struggle. The unit belonged to several elite troops of the Empire, including the Bavarian Infantry Legacy Regiment. More than half of the units of the Alpine Corps consisted of Bavarian troops.Some later officers of the Wehrmacht, but also leading National Socialists sometimes belonged to the alpine corps. Examples are only Erwin Rommel, Heinz Guderian, Ferdinand Schörner or Franz Ritter von Epp. The unit, contrary to its name, was not only used on the “Alpenfront” but was also used on the western and eastern fronts, e.g. in the “Schacht bei Hermannstadt” in Romania in September 1916. With the exception of a small number of documents that had to be reset by digitalization for conservation reasons, the entire inventory was digitized. It includes over 1840 files (about 42 running meters). A total of 307,655 images were produced. All areas of the corps are covered over the entire period of its existence. The following are mentioned by way of example: war diaries, chief shares, documents from departments Ia (Operative and Tactical) and Id (news officer), department III (field officer), the medical field (Korps doctor, Corps veterinarian) or also the area of postponement, stage and settlement. 16.08.2021: Change of office in the state archive Würzburg

With effect from September 1, 2021, archive council Dr. Alexander Wolz M.A. is appointed as head of the state archive Würzburg. He follows archive director Dr. Klaus Rupprecht, who joined the Bamberg State Archive as head of July 1, 2021. Dr. Klaus Rupprecht studied History, Anglistik and Social Studies at the University of Bamberg for the Magisterium at Gymnasium. He received his doctorate on “Ritterliches Dominique in Franken. The history of Guttenberg in the late Middle Ages and at the beginning of the early modern period”. After his lecture on the scientific archivist at the Bavarian Archive School in 1993 to 1996, Klaus Rupprecht first worked at the Bayeri Main State Archive in Munich and since 1997 at the Bamberg State Archives. He then led the Würzburg State Archive from 1 November 2016 to 30 June 2021. Alexander Wolz, who grew up in Kitzingen, studied history, folk studies and political sciences at the University of Würzburg. His thesis deals with the topic "The City of Kitzingen and the Rise of National Socialism", he received his doctorate with a dissertation on the topic "The Rhineland Crisis 1936. The Federal Foreign Office and the Locarnopakt 1933-1936. Alexander Wolz worked at the city archive Lohr am Main. From 2014 to 2016, Alexander Wolz completed the Bayerische Archivschule in Munich as a lecturer. On 21 December 2016 he took over the direction of the State Archive Coburg. The state archive Würzburg is the state authority for all questions of archives in the government district of Unterfranken. 22.10.-05.01.2021: THE BURG BRENNT! The Landshut disaster of 21.10.1961

In the night from 20. to 21. In October 1961, a fire devastated the castle Trausnitz over Landshut and the state archive Landshut, which was then housed there. The 60th anniversary State Archive Landshut in cooperation with the Bavarian administration of the state castles, gardens and lakes and the volunteer fire brigade Landshut in the exhibition “DIE BURG BRENNT! The Landshuter catastrophe of 21.10.1961” deals with the causes and consequences of the fire. Exhibition and accompanying catalogue describe the fire and its legal workup. In the flames there were essential cultural goods, fire-causing damages and gaps in unique archives of the State Archives and destroyed equipment and architecture of the "Fürstenbau" Castle of Trausnitz. The efforts of the state archives and the lock administration to remedy the damage continue to this day. Especially the former artistic design of the castle, which has almost disappeared from the memory of the Landshut population, is recalled by old photographs and a few relics borrowed from the brandy.
