13.03.2020: ‘Handwritten!? Messages in the pre-electronic age”

The State Archive Landshut participates in the following working days. In two “Feierabend tours” will be on Monday, 9th and Tuesday, 10th. March at 16.00 am the state archive Landshut presents the diverse tasks of the state archive Landshut. Following this, there is the possibility to visit the distinctive new building of the state archive at the Schlachthofstraße, which was only purchased in 2016. In addition to this, visitors can small exhibition “Handwritten!? Messages in the pre-electronic age” some selected originals on the topic “Communication” admiring.

One focus is on the correspondence of and with Edmund Jörg, who was born in 19th. Century as an archival on the castle Trausnitz and its 200th. Birthday was celebrated a few months ago. In addition, private letters from persons from all social classes, from young nobles to prison occupants in Straubing, who are handed over to the state archives.

29.4-1.10.2024: The Penzberger Pechkohlenbergwerk. The last years of an era (1954/56–1966)

From 29. April 2024 is the small exhibition “The Penzberger Pechkohlenbergwerk. The last years of an era (1954/56–1966)” in the city archive Penzberg. The exhibition was developed as part of the current archiving training for the 3rd level of qualifications at the University of Applied Sciences in Bavaria (HföD). Looking back to the past, it is clear that the search for mineral raw materials has a long tradition. Mining is particularly important. The spectrum of raw materials obtained ranges from precious stones and uranium to salts and ores to coal. Coal is mainly used as fossil fuels. Even Oberbayern was not too long ago characterized by a certain type of coal: the pitch coal. This type of coal originated in the tertiary age. As a result of the folding of the Alps and the resulting tectonic stress due to pressure and temperature, the pitch coal solidified to such an extent that it clearly belongs to the brown coal, but optically resembles the coal. It was built in Bavaria in the Penzberg, Hausham, Peiting, Peißenberg and Marienstein mines. The exhibition takes a look at the depreciation of pitch coal in the Upper Bavarian small town of Penzberg in the district Weilheim-Schongau. The focus is on modernising the mine during the last years of operation. Despite the most modern technology, however, shutdown was no longer to be stopped – the pitch coal could not withstand the cheaper mineral oil as an energy carrier. The path of coal in the modernized mine is explained in detail from the seam to the mountain neck. 25-27.09.2024: »Future-ready? Data quality and data security in museum and archive«

This year, the EDV days are dedicated to the spectrum of data quality and data security in museum and archives. Successful development, preservation and research of cultural goods is only possible in the long term on the basis of high-quality specialist information, whose lasting protection can only be ensured by appropriate systems and strategies. Data quality and data security play an essential role in museum and archive work. On the one hand, in the case of the EDV days 2024, we illuminate specific possibilities for generating technically improved, deepening and thus future-oriented development data, for example by data qualification or the use of controlled vocabulary. On the other hand, the conference will focus on current challenges in the field of data security, which are becoming increasingly relevant in view of the digital transformation processes. Information security and data protection are also indispensable in museums and archives. Two practical workshops complete the programme. The lectures on Thursday and Friday will be held in parallel Livestream transfer. The workshops are excluded on Wednesday. The stream is freely accessible via the EDV tags website. 29.03.2019: Opening of the new magazine for the Bamberg State Archive

On Friday, 29th March 2019, the extension of the Bamberg State Archive (Hainstraße 39, 96047 Bamberg State Archives) was solemnly handed over to its destination after a construction period of two and a half years. At the ceremony, Mr. Minister of State for Science and Art Bernd Sibler, MdL, gave a greeting to Mrs. Minister of State for Health and Care Melanie Huml, MdL. Minister of State Bernd Sibler stressed in advance: “The Bamberg State Archive houses a great cultural treasure. Enlargement can now bring together all stocks in one place. Valuable testimonies of our history reflect the monastery culture of the Middle Ages, the various territorial dominations and the border proximity of the region to the former GDR and the Czech Republic. In future, they will be kept under excellent conditions and made available to the public. This state-of-the-art archive offers us the best ways to deal with our history and identity. ‘ In August 2014, the then Bavarian State Ministry for Education and Culture, Science and Art issued the planning mandate for the expansion building. As part of a competition procedure, the 1st prize went to the architecture firm Peter W. Schmidt, Pforzheim. The first groundbreaking ceremony was held in October 2016, one year later the fair. The project management and construction management were located at the Bamberg State Building Office. The expansion construction with a gross space content of 14.346 m3 realizes a useful area of 3469 m2 on a base area of just under 2000 m2, of which about 200 m2 for working and storage spaces, including a cleaning room with a microbiological safety work bench. In addition, the building contains thirteen magazine rooms and three small magazines for storing special materials, especially photographs that require a colder indoor climate. The extension consists of six bullets with windowless magazines. The basement is 53.8 m long and 24.9 m wide, the five projectiles above it are square with a side length of 24.4 m. Around 18.9 kilometres of archives can be stored. The construction costs were EUR 9.1 million. With air conditioning (ventilation, heating, cooling, humidification and dehumidification) and a multilayer wall structure (from inside to outside: 25 cm reinforced concrete, 20 cm insulation, air, 8-10 cm colored concrete facade with sandstone appearance), a constant magazine climate with a temperature of 16 to 20 degrees Celsius and a relative humidity of 40 to 55 percent is to be created. The State Archive Bamberg is the state authority for all questions of archives in the administrative district of Oberfranken with the exception of the circular town of Coburg and the district of Coburg, which belong to Bavaria only since the referendum of 1920. It currently retains around 26 kilometres of archives with an average annual increase of 300 metres. In the State Archive, historically and legally relevant material from the time of 815 is transferred to the present, which is secured, developed and provided for research. 14.10.2019: Establishing an emergency network of Bamberger Archives, Libraries and Museums

Director-General of the State Archives, Dr. Margit Ksoll-Marcon, Mayor of the City of Bamberg, Mr Andreas Starke, General Vicar of the Archdiocese of Bamberg, Monsignore Georg Kestel, President of the Otto-Friedrich University of Bamberg, Prof. Dr. habil. Godehard Ruppert, and the head of the Bamberg State Library, Ms. Library Director Prof. Dr. Bettina Wagner, signed on 14. October 2019 in the City Archive Bamberg the agreement for mutual support of Bamberger Archives, Libraries and Museums in emergencies (“Notfallverbund Bamberg”). The agreement includes: joint trainings and exercises, the preparation and exchange of emergency plans, and the permanent exchange of those responsible with each other and with external partners such as the fire department and the technical aid. For the hopefully never-ending emergency, the institutions provide mutual support to bundle resources and to ensure faster and more effective recovery and initial supply of the affected archives, books and exhibits. For the institutions involved, the protection of the cultural goods they hold against fire, water, external violence or other unpredictable events is one of the most important tasks. The past has shown that the staff of the individual institutions are often overwhelmed without external assistance, which has shown impressively large disasters such as the Elbhochwasser 2002, the fire in the Weimar Anna-Amalia-Bibliothek 2004 or the collapse of the historical archive of the city of Cologne 2009. The Bamberg emergency association, established by the signing of this agreement, expressly invites the representatives of other cultural institutions in the Bamberg city area to cooperate in the future. Regensburg and his Jewish community in the Middle Ages

Tuesday, 26. October 2021, the new virtual exhibition “Regensburg and its Jewish community in the Middle Ages” was held in the Directorate-General of the State Archives of Bavaria. Dr. Astrid Riedler-Pohlers, Bayerisches Hauptstaatsarchiv, who drew up the exhibition, introduced the virtual show and presented selected exhibits. The virtual exhibition tells the history of the Jews in the medieval Regensburg. What are the conditions for Jewish life in this important city? What relations existed between Jews and Christians? What professions did they practice and what social status did they have? As large as the number of sources is, so different are the topics they tell of. Certificates, seals, Hebrew manuscripts, pictures, maps, archaeological finds and other special pieces report from the Jewish Regensburgers. Digitalisate from the holdings of eleven cultural institutions allows to virtually take these unique sources and explore details. Six chapters show how the Jewish community of Regensburg has developed and why it is so important today. The Jewish quarter and its inhabitants are presented as well as their utility with everyday needs. Religi-on was the predominant element in the Middle Ages and this was also true for the Jewish community. What diverse activities Jews carried out, as they earned their living and to whom the Jewish community was in contact, are also exciting topics such as the rights and duties that Jews had in the medieval Regensburg. The Jewish community of Regensburg remained largely spared from the waves of persecution that the Jews of Europe were exposed to in the Middle Ages. At the time of her expulsion in 1519, she was able to look back on a more than 500-year history in the city, unlike most other Jewish communities. With over 60 exhibits in six sections, the virtual exhibition makes the medieval history of the Jewish community of Regensburg alive. All exhibits, including 3D digitalisates, which are accessible for the first time, are shown in outstanding digital quality. 21.06.2022: Cooperation Agreement between the University of the Federal Armed Forces of Munich and the Directorate-General for State Archives of Bavaria signed

21. In June 2022, the President of the University of Bundeswehr Prof. Dr. Merith Niehuss, whose Vice President Prof. Dr. Uwe Borghoff and the Director-General of the State Archive Dr. Margit Ksoll-Marcon signed a cooperation agreement at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich. The aim is to co-operate the Institute of Software Technology and the datArena of the University of the Bundeswehr Munich with the state archives of Bavaria in data backup and long-term data storage. The contract includes the cooperation of the two institutions with the organization and support of student projects and internships in order to close students with forms, methods and instruments of archival information management, as well as to give insights into the field of archives and the challenges of digital long-term archiving. Focus: Recovering old records and long-term archiving The intention of the agreement is that both partners develop joint projects, scientific meetings and workshops. For this purpose, the stock of the Bavarian State Archives can be used for research purposes by students and lecturers of the Institute for Software Technology. Research projects as well as project or master's work are intended primarily to restore and interpret older data stocks of the Bavarian State Archives, document formats and digital long-term storage and long-term preservation. Software solutions that can be created in research and used for the purposes of archiving are released for use by the State Archives. “The cooperation with the state archives is of particular importance for the University of the Bundeswehr Munich and the work in the datArena. This gives our researchers access to authentic and historically valuable data material as well as close personal contacts to internationally identified experts of long-term digital archiving,” explains Prof. Dr. Borghoff. Dr. Ksoll-Marcon said: “Enge contacts to the Institute of Software Technology at the University of the Bundeswehr have existed for many years and are intensified by this cooperation. The aim is to make research data readable and usable and to further develop the necessary technologies." The datArena: A forum of encounter The signing of the cooperation agreement took place in the new premises of the datArena on the grounds of the University of the Bundeswehr Munich. The datArena is a teaching, research and exhibition centre that conveys between technical, cultural and social history and will also offer researchers, students and the public a forum for encounters. The datArena was founded jointly by Prof. Dr. Borghoff and John G. Zabulitzky. At present, a move on the grounds is completed. In addition to valuable, technology-historical, representative electronic computers, the datArena houses a software archive of international rank and one of the largest collections of historical digital media. Since the software and media can be used on functional devices from the respective era, historical software and digital documents can be brought back to life. Thus, datArena offers an excellent infrastructure for research in the field of digital long-term archiving and preservation of digital cultural heritage. In conjunction with the datArena, courses and internships of the Bayerische Archivschule will be organized and conducted in the future.

26.09.2024: Presentation of the archive inventory “Staatsarchiv Coburg. Imperial Chamber Court (Bayerische Archivinventare 60)’

The Reichskammergericht (1495–1806) was, in addition to and in competition with the Reichshofrat (1498/1527–1806), one of the two highest dishes in the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. The process files were managed by the German Confederation in Wetzlar and around the middle of the 19. After the separation criteria developed at the time were distributed to the German states. In 1853, the Duchy of Saxony-Coburg and Gotha Reichskammergerichtsakten, which remained in Gotha for the smaller part, also received a majority vote in Coburg. The tradition of the Reich Chamber Court over 77,000 files, distributed in 48 archives in Germany and abroad, is one of the most extensive and important archival sources of early modern times. In particular, the evidence submitted in the course of the process management provides clear insights into the life world of previous centuries. Because the court records are of high value for legal and Reich history, but also for national, economic and social history, the German Research Foundation started the long-term project “Inventory of the files of the Reich Chamber Court” at the end of the 1970s: Essentially, the content of each process is briefly described according to uniform specifications and is developed via registers. This project is completed, although not all inventory is fully under pressure. Important income also provides the development of the files of the Reichshofrats, which are predominantly located in the Haus-, Hof- and Staatsarchiv in Vienna. The Inventory Band for State Archive Coburg includes 76 Reichskammergerichtsakten. Most of the Coburg processes are due to the reign of Duke Johann Casimir of Saxony-Coburg (1564–1633). The further Reich Chamber Court tradition, concerning Bavaria in its current borders, is completely located in the Bavarian Main State Archive in Munich.
