16.08.2021: Change of office in the state archive Würzburg

With effect from September 1, 2021, archive council Dr. Alexander Wolz M.A. is appointed as head of the state archive Würzburg. He follows archive director Dr. Klaus Rupprecht, who joined the Bamberg State Archive as head of July 1, 2021.

Dr. Klaus Rupprecht studied History, Anglistik and Social Studies at the University of Bamberg for the Magisterium at Gymnasium. He received his doctorate on “Ritterliches Dominique in Franken. The history of Guttenberg in the late Middle Ages and at the beginning of the early modern period”. After his lecture on the scientific archivist at the Bavarian Archive School in 1993 to 1996, Klaus Rupprecht first worked at the Bayeri Main State Archive in Munich and since 1997 at the Bamberg State Archives. He then led the Würzburg State Archive from 1 November 2016 to 30 June 2021.

Alexander Wolz, who grew up in Kitzingen, studied history, folk studies and political sciences at the University of Würzburg. His thesis deals with the topic "The City of Kitzingen and the Rise of National Socialism", he received his doctorate with a dissertation on the topic "The Rhineland Crisis 1936. The Federal Foreign Office and the Locarnopakt 1933-1936. Alexander Wolz worked at the city archive Lohr am Main. From 2014 to 2016, Alexander Wolz completed the Bayerische Archivschule in Munich as a lecturer. On 21 December 2016 he took over the direction of the State Archive Coburg.

The state archive Würzburg is the state authority for all questions of archives in the government district of Unterfranken. In 1764, the then princely-Turfish-Turzburgian archive moved from the Marienberg fortress to the Würzburg residence. At that time it was housed in the residence north wing where it is still present. The archive is expected to move from Würzburg to Kitzingen in 2025/26 after 260 years. The central challenges for the new owner are therefore the accompanying of the construction measures and the moving and the associated intensive preparations.

The state archive Würzburg preserves around 8.65 million archives in the amount of 26.4 km (as at the end of 2020). It is responsible for the transfer of all government officials, courts and prosecutors of the middle and lower level in the Lower Franconian government district and the notaries of the Bamberg Oberlandesgericht district.

15.09.2022: Digitization program NEUSTART CULTURE - Alpenkorps

With its own digitalization project, the Bavarian State Archives participate in NEUSTART CULTURE>>, in which the German Digital Library is also supported. The collection “Alpenkorps” of the department IV (war archive) of the Bavarian Main State Archive was selected. Not only because the “Kommando des Alpenkorps” briefly resided in the premises used today by the departments III and V of the Bavarian Main State Archive in 1915, this inventory is of particular importance for the Bavarian military history. In the spring of 2015, the Alpine Corps was the subject of a teaching exhibition by the Bavarian State Archives. The exhibition catalogue is ANNEX free of charge. When it was set up on the occasion of the war in Italy in 1915, the Alpine Corps was a new special military unit, since until that time the German Empire had no troops for the mountain struggle. The unit belonged to several elite troops of the Empire, including the Bavarian Infantry Legacy Regiment. More than half of the units of the Alpine Corps consisted of Bavarian troops.Some later officers of the Wehrmacht, but also leading National Socialists sometimes belonged to the alpine corps. Examples are only Erwin Rommel, Heinz Guderian, Ferdinand Schörner or Franz Ritter von Epp. The unit, contrary to its name, was not only used on the “Alpenfront” but was also used on the western and eastern fronts, e.g. in the “Schacht bei Hermannstadt” in Romania in September 1916. With the exception of a small number of documents that had to be reset by digitalization for conservation reasons, the entire inventory was digitized. It includes over 1840 files (about 42 running meters). A total of 307,655 images were produced. All areas of the corps are covered over the entire period of its existence. The following are mentioned by way of example: war diaries, chief shares, documents from departments Ia (Operative and Tactical) and Id (news officer), department III (field officer), the medical field (Korps doctor, Corps veterinarian) or also the area of postponement, stage and settlement. 22.10.-05.01.2021: THE BURG BRENNT! The Landshut disaster of 21.10.1961

In the night from 20. to 21. In October 1961, a fire devastated the castle Trausnitz over Landshut and the state archive Landshut, which was then housed there. The 60th anniversary State Archive Landshut in cooperation with the Bavarian administration of the state castles, gardens and lakes and the volunteer fire brigade Landshut in the exhibition “DIE BURG BRENNT! The Landshuter catastrophe of 21.10.1961” deals with the causes and consequences of the fire. Exhibition and accompanying catalogue describe the fire and its legal workup. In the flames there were essential cultural goods, fire-causing damages and gaps in unique archives of the State Archives and destroyed equipment and architecture of the "Fürstenbau" Castle of Trausnitz. The efforts of the state archives and the lock administration to remedy the damage continue to this day. Especially the former artistic design of the castle, which has almost disappeared from the memory of the Landshut population, is recalled by old photographs and a few relics borrowed from the brandy. These include the colourful, fearful room halls from Spätrenaissance and Barock and the magnificent "Absteigquartier" King Ludwigs II from the 1870s. The Exhibition "DIE BURG BRENNT! Revolution and Räterepubliken in Bavaria 1918/19

100. Birthday of the Free State presented bavaricon the exciting and dramatic history of its beginnings in a virtual exhibition. Five chronological sections and a level of deepening bring you closer to the Revolutionary Years 1918/19. The focus is on the events in the capital Munich, which were decisive for all Bavaria. In addition, the various developments are included in ten other locations of Altbayerns, Frankens and Schwabens. 90 high-calibre exhibits from archives, libraries and museums show you the decisive changes and changes of this time – with all their breakthrough achievements, but also the problematic accompanying phenomena and consequences. The Constitution of the Kingdom of Bavaria 1818–1918

The exhibition opens a wide panorama of the 19th and beginning 20. century in Bavaria. Not only is the creation of the constitution, but also its further development, which led to an increasing parliamentaryization of the Bavarian monarchy. Individual aspects of constitutional reality round off the picture. One can approach the topic about the intensively explained individual exhibits or thematically about the individual sections of the exhibition. 15.4.2024: New construction for the state archive Würzburg in Kitzingen

Bavaria’s building minister Christian Bernreiter, represented locally by Ministerial Director Ingrid Simet, expressed his congratulations: “Modern archival work requires modern spaces, because despite digitization, the storage of archived goods is indispensable. I am therefore pleased that the work is on the cost and timetable. ‘ Director-General of the State Archives, Dr. Bernhard Grau, expressed great joy in his greeting that the State Archive for Lower Franconia in Kitzingen receives an architecturally impressive service building that fully meets the high demands of modern archive construction. He stressed the importance of the new building for the historical tradition of Unterfranken and pointed out that the oldest document in state ownership will be preserved here in Kitzingen in future. Spatial engraving for the construction project was in May 2023, the completion of the building is planned for the end of 2025, the state archive is expected to commence its operation at the new site at the end of 2026. 02.06.2022-15.07.2022: Act and songbook. Church and State in Central France

The Landeskirchliche Archiv der Evangelisch-Lutherischen Kirche in Bayern (LAELKB) and the Staatsarchiv Nürnberg will present a joint exhibition at LAELKB from 2 June to 15 July 2022. Since spring 2020, during the renovation and expansion of its buildings in Archivstraße 17, the State Archives has sold most of the collections before 1800 in rented LAELKB magazines. A part of the exhibits is therefore temporarily under a roof. In view of the two archivists, a discussion of the relationship between the Church and the State was offered as a topic. The Landeskirchliche Archiv preserves church documents from the entire Free State. The State Archive Nuremberg is responsible for the written delivery of the state authorities and courts in Central Franconia. Therefore, we have spatially limited the subject: "Church and State in Central Franconia". The exhibits range from the Reformation period to the present. In selected examples, both mutual proximity and conflicts between state and church are clear. For example, in the introduction of the Reformation, in the 18th century, there is a closeness to the process of reforming. Centuries in the construction of numerous churches in the Markgraftum Brandenburg-Ansbach, which are today called Markgrafenkirchen, as well as after 1800 in schools and in the participation of the pastors in vaccinations. Conflicts occurred both in the age of absolutism with the lifelong imprisonment of an Anglo-Saxon court preacher and confessor as well as in the time of the Nazi dictatorship with prison sentences against priests because of statements that seem rather harmless from today's point of view. There were also frictions during the transition of Franconian territories to the Kingdom of Bavaria after 1806. 15.01.2020: Reduction of two medieval documents from the USA - Press discussion on 15th January 2019 in the State Archive Nuremberg

Wednesday, 15. January 2020 (15.00) two documents missing since the end of World War II were returned to the State Archive Nuremberg by the Federal Foreign Office. The two documents from 1418 showed up in the USA in 2019 in the estate of a former US soldier and were able to be returned to Nuremberg by the Federal Foreign Office. In the Second World War, the State Archive Nuremberg held its most valuable collections due to imminent air raids at numerous mountain sites. In total, almost 17 kilometres of archived goods were located in 32 different locations around approx. 80 km around Nuremberg. One of the depots was in the castle Sandsee (now district Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen). There were 137 boxes with late-medieval documents. Immediately after the end of the war, this depot was plundered, more than 70 parchment certificates disappeared. Already in 1987 and 1991, a total of 20 missing documents came from the USA back to Nuremberg. Archives of the Free State of Bavaria for “Reparation” National Socialist Unright

‘reparation files’ are important sources of historical research due to the detailed biographical information and the attached evidence. On the 7th Day of Provenance Research on the 9th April 2025 show the Bavarian State Archives with a small showcase presentation in the Bavarian Main State Archive, which provides insights into persecution skills based on this file group. The Day of Provenance Research conveys the social and scientific relevance of this research area and takes place every year on the second Wednesday in April. In the example of the persecution fate of the Jewish woman Hedwig Bobelle during the NS period, it is shown which evaluation possibilities for example offer the compensation files. The Compensation Act contains applications submitted by Hedwig Bobelle to the Bavarian State Compensation Office from 1954. These requests for damage to freedom, property and property as well as professional and economic progress illustrate, among other things, the handling of the recovery authorities with the formerly persecuted. In many cases, detailed evidence was required which were hardly to be provided, since almost everything had to be left behind on the flight, in detention and other war-related fates. It is also clear that not only cultural goods such as paintings, musical instruments or valuable books have been robbed. Everyday objects, from personal memorabilia to furnishings, were also deprived of Nazi persecution. Files such as those of Hedwig Bobelle will be made available online in the future, taking into account the legal bases. For this purpose, between 2023 and 2030 a part of the archival tradition is digitized and deepened for the “reparation” of NS injustice of the state archives of Bavaria. Development data and digitalisates are provided online via the finder database of the Bavarian State Archives and the thematic portal “Reparation of National Socialist Unright” in the “Archivportal-D”. The digitization project was initiated by the Federal Ministry of Finance, which has been responsible for the “reparation” of national socialist injustice as the top specialist authority since the early 1950s.
