Guided tour of the State Archive Landshut with archival presentation

The State Archive Landshut participates in the following working days. On Monday, 9th and Tuesday, 10th will be held in two “Feierabend tours”. March at 16.00 a.m. in the Landshut State Archive presented the diverse tasks of the Landshut State Archive. Following this, there is the possibility to visit the distinctive new building of the state archive at the Schlachthofstraße, which was only purchased in 2016. To this end, visitors can also use the small exhibition “Handwritten!? Messages in the pre-electronic age” admire some selected originals on the subject of “communication”.

One focus is on the correspondence of and with Edmund Jörg, who was born in 19th. Century as an archival on the castle Trausnitz and its 200th. Birthday was celebrated a few months ago. In addition, private letters from persons from all social classes, from young nobles to prison occupants in Straubing, who are handed over to the state archives.

15.11.2019: Establishing an emergency network of archives and libraries in Amberg and Sulzbach-Rosenberg

The Director-General of the State Archives, Dr. Margit Ksoll-Marcon, the Mayor of the City of Amberg, Mr. Michael Cerny, the Director-General of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Dr. Klaus Ceynowa, and the 1st Chairman of the Literaturarchiv Sulzbach-Rosenberg e.V., Mr. PD Dr. habil. Heribert Tommek, signed on 15. November 2019 at 10 a.m. in the Amberg State Archives the mutual support of archives and libraries in Amberg and Sulzbach-Rosenberg in emergencies (“Notfallverbund Amberg – Sulzbach-Rosenberg”). According to the emergency associations Augsburg (founded in 2015), Munich (founded in 2016), Nuremberg (founded in 2016), Landshut (founded in 2019) and Bamberg (founded in 2019), the association Amberg – Sulzbach-Rosenberg is the sixth of this kind in Bavaria. From an archival point of view it should be emphasized that the depot of the Amberg State Archive in Sulzbach-Rosenberg is also part of the association. The agreement includes: joint trainings and exercises, the preparation and exchange of emergency plans, and regular exchange of those responsible with each other and with external partners such as fire brigade and technical assistance. For the hopefully never-ending emergency, archives and libraries provide mutual support in order to bundle resources and to ensure faster and more effective recovery and initial supply of the affected archives, books and exhibits. One of the most important tasks of the institutions involved is the protection of the cultural goods they hold against fire, water, external violence or other unpredictable events. The past has shown that the employees of the individual institutions are often overwhelmed with large damage events without external assistance. Great catastrophes such as the Elbhochwasser 2002, the fire in the Weimar Duchess Anna Amalia Library 2004 or the collapse of the historical archives of the city of Cologne 2009 have shown this in an impressive way. Strong rains and flood events in the recent past led to a number of Bavarian nobility archives that were able to be managed with united forces. Fortunately, the institutions involved in Bavarian emergency alliances have not yet had to deal with major emergencies. The fire of the Trausnitz Castle in Landshut remains on the 21st. In October 1961, the state archive Landshut, which was currently housed there, was seriously affected. At that time, the Bavarian archive administration had to make its own experience with a large fire disaster and damage to archives and building materials. Archives, science and research have always been working closely together. In addition, archives understand themselves as service providers for the public and thus also for research. The digi-tal change today opens up new opportunities for cooperation on both sides, combined with new challenges. What are the ways in which the archives are to engage in cooperation with research? New paths are, for example, archives that use the narrowing of interested lay people within the framework of Citizen Science, but at the same time have to ask themselves about the limits of this form of cooperation. New Zealand also enters the cultural institutions that connect themselves to technology affinities and culture-enhancing communities within the framework of the cultural hackathon “Coding da Vinci”. And finally, can programs learn to recognize and read manuscripts independently and thus complement or even replace one of the core competencies of the historical aid sciences? The 11. 29.11.2019: 10 years Bavarian-Czech Archive Partnership - Festakt im Staatsarchiv Amberg

On 29 November 2019, the ten-year successful partnership of the Bavarian State Archives with Czech archives in the presence of the Minister of State for Science and Art, Bernd Sibler, MdL, and the Director of the Czech Archives Administration PhDr. Jiří Úlovec, celebrated and shared in the future. “A look into our archives reveals how closely Bavaria and the Czech Republic are connected: For centuries we have shared a common cross-border history. The close cooperation of our archives helps to make this valuable cultural heritage even more visible. At the same time, the archives set a clear sign for our partnership exchange and our good neighborhood. “The Bavarian Minister of State for Science and Art Bernd Sibler, MdL, said in his greeting. Ten years ago, the cooperation project “Bayerisch-Tschechisches Netzwerk digital history sources” established the firm cooperation of the Bavarian State Archives with the Pilsen District Archive. As part of the project funded by the European Union, historical sources of the Bavarian-Böhmic border area from Bavarian and Czech archives were digitized and virtually on the own bilingual presentation platform “Portafontium” on the Internet. (http://www.portafontium.de/) brought together. This common platform was significantly expanded with the Czech-Bayerische Archivführer (2013 to 2015). As a bilingual online database, the archive guide is a new access to Bohemica in Bavarian archives and Bavarica in Czech archives. The latest building of the Bavarian-Czech archive collaboration is the project “Modern access to historical sources”. Currently the Bavarica and Bohemica recorded in “Porta fontium” range from the early 11th. century to the recent past. Thus the Czech-Bavarian archival leader presents the tradition of an entire millennium. The oldest proven document dated 19th April 1010 King Henry II gives his share of customs to Passau and the entire Bohemian customs (Munich, Bayerisches Hauptstaatsarchiv, Hochstift Passau Documents 25/1). “Porta fontium” receives a module on historical maps and plans with its own search and display tool. German and Czech researchers working on home-historical, family-kund or scientific topics can provide an overview of archives and stocks in their mother tongue. 09.11.2019: "Der Reichswald - Holz für Nürnberg und seine Dorf" - Exhibition at the Staatsarchiv Nürnberg

The State Archive Nuremberg shows from 9 November to 20 December 2019 the exhibition “The Nuremberg Reichswald – Wood for Nuremberg and its villages”. The exhibition was prepared by the State Archive Nuremberg together with the Franconian Freilandmuseum Bad Windsheim. Wood as an important and renewable raw material was already significant in the Middle Ages. 14th and 15th The city of Nuremberg secured the rights to the large forests around the city. Two “forest offices” were responsible for the administration, which controlled the wood consumption of the subjects. Not only the firewood cover was regulated, but also timber had to be applied. To save wood, more stone was used for building. The written delivery of the forest offices Lorenzi and Sebaldi in the state archive Nuremberg includes a total of 83 shelves. In the documents there are around 5,300 mostly coloured construction plans of farmhouses, stables and barns, fences, mills and furnaces from the 16th to the end of the 18th century. Century – a unique treasure in Germany. After several years of work, these files are now opened and all plans are digitized. The plans document the appearance and change of villages, mansions and mills in the “Old Landscape”. What is hidden from exciting stories behind the files of a rich city authority shows examples of black structures, unauthorized woodwork and the devastations of the Thirty Years War. In addition to files and the most beautiful plans, the exhibition features house models and typical woodworking tools from the collections of the Franconian Freeland Museum. 05.11.2019: Historical Missing Books in the Bavarian Main State Archive and the State Archive Munich

“Get away from the Inn on 27.1.76” or “taken up in Copenhagen on 11.11.75” – two fates of thousands of people from Bavaria who are reported missing every year at the police services. Most missing persons are found alive, individual cases end tragically. Unknown dead and unknown helpless people to register and identify is a difficult task of the police. These processes are coordinated in the field of personal identification of the Bayerische Landeskriminalamt. In August 2019, the Bayerische Landeskriminalamt handed over three large cartons with a total of 57 so-called missing books from 1926 to 1985 to the Bayerische Hauptstaatsarchiv. After a more precise analysis of their origin, the eleven older volumes from the period before 1945 were submitted to the State Archive Munich. These volumes come from a time when the Missing Books were still held centrally by the Munich police office for the whole of Bavaria. The State Archive Munich is responsible for its transmission. Thus, a central source with evidence of all persons missing in Bavaria, unknown dead and unknown helpless persons (VuT) from about 60 years is available for historical research. What was documented on paper in thick volumes by 1988 has been recorded electronically since then – these digital documents will also come to the Bayerische Hauptstaatsarchiv one day. The archiving of the missing books is an expression of the excellent cooperation of the Bavarian police authorities with the Bavarian state archives. Consciousness for the permanent preservation of historically valuable administrative documents shapes the contact between the police authorities and the competent archives. It is now the task of the Bayerischer Hauptstaatsarchiv and the Staatsarchiv München to develop the newly acquired missing books, to treat them conservatively and to make them accessible to interested researchers in accordance with legal requirements. If the National Criminal Office needs the one or the other band again, because all the last missing persons so far could still be clarified, there is the possibility of returning. 15.01.2020: Reduction of two medieval documents from the USA - Press discussion on 15th January 2019 in the State Archive Nuremberg

Wednesday, 15. January 2020 (15.00) two documents missing since the end of World War II were returned to the State Archive Nuremberg by the Federal Foreign Office. The two documents from 1418 showed up in the USA in 2019 in the estate of a former US soldier and were able to be returned to Nuremberg by the Federal Foreign Office. In the Second World War, the State Archive Nuremberg held its most valuable collections due to imminent air raids at numerous mountain sites. In total, almost 17 kilometres of archived goods were located in 32 different locations around approx. 80 km around Nuremberg. One of the depots was in the castle Sandsee (now district Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen). There were 137 boxes with late-medieval documents. Immediately after the end of the war, this depot was plundered, more than 70 parchment certificates disappeared. Already in 1987 and 1991, a total of 20 missing documents came from the USA back to Nuremberg.
