01.08.2022: Bayerisches Hauptstaatsarchiv acquires collection to the Bayreuth Festival

Bayerisches Hauptstaatsarchiv acquires collection to the Bayreuth Festival Since its foundation by Richard Wagner in 1876, the Bayreuth Festival has been one of Bavaria's outstanding cultural events with international broadcasting. After laborious years of construction and a phase of ideological segregation by the National Socialists, a new beginning was achieved after World War II. The Bayreuth Festival has been attracting political and social prominence every year since 1951. The Bavarian State Archive has now been able to acquire an extensive private collection of the Bayreuth Festivals from the post-war period. For the post-war period, the collection stock formed from it and from existing material includes all the program books of the Festival, accompanying publications such as the “Festspiel Preview” and the “Festspiel News” and other printed material that often has rarity value. The press sections and photo albums contained are of particular importance. The photo albums not only combine the official role and stage photos, but also complement them with private recordings from the social environment and the inner circle of artistic actors. In addition to the national and partly international press, the press sections also take into account the rest of the German-speaking press. The media echo of the Bayreuth Festival is thus gathered in a number of times – from pre-reporting on current reviews and reports to review. In the cultural sector – unlike in politics – there are often few official sources and usually fewer private sources. In addition, discourses were often medial. Therefore, the delivery of press in the cultural sector is of particular quality. The dense delivery to press clips in the Bayreuth Festival Collection is therefore a special lucky case. The documents were collected by Willy Wesemann (1910–1985). The violinist was a member of the Festival Orchestra for decades and was therefore closely related to all artistic participants. As an enthusiastic collector, he took great effort. During the festive season, he referred to the most important press organs himself and advertised them for his collection, as well as photographed himself. All press cutouts were finely cut, provided with source information and stored clean. His whole family was involved in these works. His daughter Astrid Zimdahl-Wesemann has now left the collection of about three shelves to the Free State of Bavaria. The new “Bayreuth Festival Collection” complements the existing collections of the Bavarian Main State Archive with reference to the Bayreuth Festival. In addition to the state tradition mainly from the Ministry of Culture, this is mainly the two estates of Wieland and Wolfgang Wagner. In their time, both of them were decisive for the Bayreuth Festival and the opera world as a whole. The Bayerische Hauptstaatsarchiv is the central archive of the Free State of Bavaria and one of the largest archives in Germany. In addition to official documents, it also retains non-state archives. These include in particular estates of important personalities and collections.

29.11.2019: 10 years Bavarian-Czech Archive Partnership - Festakt im Staatsarchiv Amberg

On 29 November 2019, the ten-year successful partnership of the Bavarian State Archives with Czech archives in the presence of the Minister of State for Science and Art, Bernd Sibler, MdL, and the Director of the Czech Archives Administration PhDr. Jiří Úlovec, celebrated and shared in the future. “A look into our archives reveals how closely Bavaria and the Czech Republic are connected: For centuries we have shared a common cross-border history. The close cooperation of our archives helps to make this valuable cultural heritage even more visible. At the same time, the archives set a clear sign for our partnership exchange and our good neighborhood. “The Bavarian Minister of State for Science and Art Bernd Sibler, MdL, said in his greeting. Ten years ago, the cooperation project “Bayerisch-Tschechisches Netzwerk digital history sources” established the firm cooperation of the Bavarian State Archives with the Pilsen District Archive. As part of the project funded by the European Union, historical sources of the Bavarian-Böhmic border area from Bavarian and Czech archives were digitized and virtually on the own bilingual presentation platform “Portafontium” on the Internet. (http://www.portafontium.de/) brought together. This common platform was significantly expanded with the Czech-Bayerische Archivführer (2013 to 2015). As a bilingual online database, the archive guide is a new access to Bohemica in Bavarian archives and Bavarica in Czech archives. The latest building of the Bavarian-Czech archive collaboration is the project “Modern access to historical sources”. Currently the Bavarica and Bohemica recorded in “Porta fontium” range from the early 11th. century to the recent past. Thus the Czech-Bavarian archival leader presents the tradition of an entire millennium. The oldest proven document dated 19th April 1010 King Henry II gives his share of customs to Passau and the entire Bohemian customs (Munich, Bayerisches Hauptstaatsarchiv, Hochstift Passau Documents 25/1). “Porta fontium” receives a module on historical maps and plans with its own search and display tool. German and Czech researchers working on home-historical, family-kund or scientific topics can provide an overview of archives and stocks in their mother tongue. Archive research can thus be prepared in a targeted manner at the local PC and planned for cross-border archive trips. Access to archives has become easier. Nuremberg succession processes 1946–1949: Digitization projects started

Immediately after the Nuremberg trials against the war criminals of the Second World War, the so-called Nuremberg succession processes started. In contrast to the main war criminal proceedings before an International Court of Justice, these proceedings, which took place in Nuremberg between 1946 and 1949, were negotiated exclusively before American military courts. 185 senior lawyers, medical professionals, industrialists, SS and police leaders, military, civil servants and diplomats were charged in a total of 12 trials. The processes showed to what extent the German leadership layer had contributed to the power system of the Nazi rule of violence. Of the 185 defendants, 24 received the death penalty, 20 were sentenced to life imprisonment, 98 received several years of imprisonment. 35 of the accused were acquitted. In the 1950s, pardons led to all convicted NS criminals being released from custody until 1957. Of the 24 death sentences, 13 were actually executed. New standards in the scientific work-up of the Nuremberg succession processes Over the course of the processes, approximately 2.5 million sheets of process files were produced, which are stored in the original state archive in Nuremberg: statements by witnesses, indictments, stenographic records, defence documents, interrogation protocols and other official and private documents. With the project “Digital Nuremberg Military Tribunals” (DigiNMT), BAdW, FAU and the Directorate-General of the Bavarian State Archives enable the scientific work-up of the Nuremberg succession processes. The aim is to fully digitize, develop structured and make accessible on an interactive platform globally the process files that are threatened by poor paper quality. This contributes significantly to the conservation and preservation of the original documents. “DigiNMT is an innovative lighthouse project for digital humanities,” says Christoph Safferling, owner of the FAU Chair of Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, International Criminal Law and International Law and one of the project leaders. “The aim of the project is to enable researchers and interested parties to systematically view and analyze the whole of the documents in an interdisciplinary manner.” By combining artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language processing (NLP) with legal and historical approaches, the previously fragmented research on the succession processes is to be given a new basis. “The Digital Humanities are continuously strengthened as a research focus of BAdW. I am pleased that this project can help to significantly promote legal and historical research into the Nuremberg follow-up processes,” says Academy President Markus Schwaiger. Research data development The project focuses on the digital presentation of the historical files, which are prepared in three stages of development: from digitization to confiscation to bilingual commentary. “With the digital provision of this enormous database complex, research and the public are opening up new and significantly improved possibilities of access and evaluation,” says Director-General Bernhard Grau (Directorate-General of the Bavarian State Archives). With the help of AI-based analyses, new findings on biographical networks, legal accounting models and the dynamic processes of post-war justice are to be gained. Particularly innovative is the possibility to create interactive visualizations that make complex relationships between actors, evidence and legal concepts visible. Importance of international research The digital platform aims to provide open access to researchers around the world and inspire new research questions. “The Nuremberg succession processes not only mark a legal milestone but also historically a milestone,” explains Simone Derix, owner of the FAU Chair for Latest History and Time History and also project manager. “With DigiNMT, we create the basis for analysing their importance for the development of international criminal law and the work-up of Nazi crimes at a new depth. ‘ The project follows the FAIR and CARE principles – thus ensuring the traceability, interoperability and reusability of the data, but also taking into account ethical and collective responsibility aspects. The data architecture also ensures the connectivity for future research projects and enables cooperation with international institutions. 17.10.2022-13.01.2023: Hitler's train to Coburg - The German Day of 1922

On 14 and 15 In October 1922 Adolf Hitler and with him 650 SA men appeared in Coburg for the first time in a larger style outside Munich. The gathering of various vaterland and völk associations was ultimately dominated by Hitler’s SA, which, after violent confrontations with local emonstrators, claimed to have liberated Coburg from the “red terror” of the workers. The event took great attention throughout Germany and was anticipation of the crisis year 1923, at the end of which the Hitler coup stood. As a “mark of movement” it should be permanently inserted into the party myth of the NSDAP. The exhibition of the three institutions aims to illuminate the circumstances of Hitler's appearance in Coburg, to present important protagonists and scenes and to highlight the importance of the event for Coburg and the history of the NSDAP. 25.01.2022: Nachlass Bezirkstagspräsident a.D. Dr. Georg Simnacher (1932-2014) transferred to the Staatsarchiv Augsburg.

The estate of District President a.D. Dr. Georg Simnacher (1932-2014) has been kept in the state archive of Augsburg since summer 2021. In 2009, Günzburg's long-standing Land Council and district president of Schwaben concluded a donation agreement with the Staatsarchiv Augsburg, which regulates the later acquisition of his written estate. After a vision and preordination by Simnacher Witwe Ms. Ursula Simnacher, the estate was handed over to the state archive of Augsburg. There the estate is archived and protected conservatively. He is available for inspection on the basis of the Bavarian Archives Act. The documents complement the official tradition of the state archives of Augsburg, especially the state council offices and the government of Schwaben. Dr. Georg Simnacher decided early for a political career. After studying law in Munich and Erlangen and law-historical doctorate, the CSU politician has already become a Landrat of Günzburg with 34 years of age. He had this office from 1967 to 1996. From 1974 to 2003, he was also the President of the District of Schwaben. The “Schwabenherzog”, as he was lovingly called, was also president of the association of Bavarian districts initiated by him from 1979 to 2003 (now Bavarian District Day). Here he strengthened the reputation of the districts as the third municipal level in Bavaria and gave their concerns hearing. Simnacher has left deep traces of health care and social policy, as well as the cultural and home care of Schwaben. Simnacher's private writing includes, in addition to biographical material (interferences, certificates, certificates) and documents from professional activity (acquisition documents before the circular or district day, papers, speeches and greetings, press collection), also private correspondence (accordings of many well-known political companions) as well as material on individual projects that were particularly close to his heart as District Presidents. These include the renovation of the former monastery church of Irsee and the establishment of a Swabian educational centre there, the rehabilitation of the Kurhaustheater in Augsburg or the decentralization of the district clinics in Kaufbeuren and Günzburg. 14.3.-4.4.2023: Cannon bells. Bell seizure and restoration in Bavaria 1917–1922

The 14th. March 2023 became the small exhibition “Glocken zu Kanonen. Bell seizure and restoration in Bavaria 1917–1922” opened in the Bavarian Main State Archive. The exhibition was developed as part of the current archiving training for the 3rd level of qualifications at the University of Applied Sciences in Bavaria (HföD). Bells have shaped our everyday life as a clock generator for centuries. In their ornamental and sound art, they testify not only to the worship of God and the saints, but also to the craftsmen of their founders. In the First World War, about one third of the Bavarian bells were crushed and melted to cover the metal requirements of the armaments industry. Despite these massive losses, the “Glockenland Bayern” succeeded better than other countries of the German Reich to preserve its bell stock as far as possible and in particular to preserve historical bells from destruction. The exhibition is dedicated to the processes and actors of bell events during the First World War in Bavaria. 16.07.2019: Establishing an emergency network of the Landshuter Archives, Libraries and Museums

The Director-General of the State Archives, Dr. Margit Ksoll-Marcon, the Mayor of the City of Landshut, Mr Alexander Putz and the aegis of the Seligenthal Monastery, Sister M. Petra Articus sign on the 16th. July 2019 at 10 a.m. in Landshut State Archives, Libraries and Museums (“Landshuter Archives, Libraries and Museums”). The agreement includes: joint trainings and exercises, the preparation and exchange of emergency plans, and the permanent exchange of those responsible with each other and with external partners such as the fire department and the technical aid. For the hopefully never-ending emergency, the archives secure mutual support to bundle resources, as well as to ensure faster and more effective recovery and initial supply of the affected archives, books and exhibits. For the institutions involved, the protection of the cultural goods they hold against fire, water, external violence or other unpredictable events is one of the most important tasks. The past has shown that the staff of the individual institutions are often overwhelmed without external assistance, which has shown great disasters such as the Elbhochwasser 2002, the fire in the Weimar Anna-Amalia Library 2004 or the collapse of the historical archives of the city of Cologne 2009. Due to the fire of the Trausnitz Castle on 21 October 1961, which also seriously affected the state archive Landshut, which was then housed there, the city of Landshut and the Landshut archives had to make their own experiences with great fire disasters and damage to archivia and building material. 02.12.2022: Constitutional Order for Director-General of the State Archive a.D., Dr. Margit Ksoll-Marcon

Among other things, Margit Ksoll-Marcon conceived and initiated various exhibitions on the history of the Bavarian Constitutions during her professional career. The aim was always to permanently anchor the Constitution as the basis of our community in the historical consciousness of the population. For many years, a further focus of their work was cross-border cooperation with Czech archives, making it an invaluable contribution to the confrontation with the alternating common history of the people in the Czech Republic and Bavaria and thus to international understanding. Margit Ksoll-Marcon has acquired great merits to preserve and share the constitutional history of the Free State.
