15.09.2022: Digitization program NEUSTART CULTURE - Alpenkorps

With its own digitalization project, the Bavarian State Archives participate in NEUSTART CULTURE>>, in which the German Digital Library is also supported. The collection “Alpenkorps” of the department IV (war archive) of the Bavarian Main State Archive was selected. Not only because the “Kommando des Alpenkorps” briefly resided in the premises used today by the departments III and V of the Bavarian Main State Archive in 1915, this inventory is of particular importance for the Bavarian military history. In the spring of 2015, the Alpine Corps was the subject of a teaching exhibition by the Bavarian State Archives. The exhibition catalogue is ANNEX free of charge. When it was set up on the occasion of the war in Italy in 1915, the Alpine Corps was a new special military unit, since until that time the German Empire had no troops for the mountain struggle. The unit belonged to several elite troops of the Empire, including the Bavarian Infantry Legacy Regiment. More than half of the units of the Alpine Corps consisted of Bavarian troops.Some later officers of the Wehrmacht, but also leading National Socialists sometimes belonged to the alpine corps. Examples are only Erwin Rommel, Heinz Guderian, Ferdinand Schörner or Franz Ritter von Epp. The unit, contrary to its name, was not only used on the “Alpenfront” but was also used on the western and eastern fronts, e.g. in the “Schacht bei Hermannstadt” in Romania in September 1916. With the exception of a small number of documents that had to be reset by digitalization for conservation reasons, the entire inventory was digitized. It includes over 1840 files (about 42 running meters). A total of 307,655 images were produced. All areas of the corps are covered over the entire period of its existence. The following are mentioned by way of example: war diaries, chief shares, documents from departments Ia (Operative and Tactical) and Id (news officer), department III (field officer), the medical field (Korps doctor, Corps veterinarian) or also the area of postponement, stage and settlement. 09.03.2020: Selected documents on "Communication" - Tag Archives at the Coburg State Archive on Monday, 9th March 2020

17.07.2020: Archiving Agreement between the Bavarian National Museum and the Bavarian State Archives

On 17. July 2020 at 10 a.m., the Director-General of the State Archives, Dr. Margit Ksoll-Marcon and the Director-General of the Bavarian National MuseumMr. Dr. Frank Matthias Kammel, an archiving agreement. The agreement regulates the separation and transfer of archive-ready documents from the register of the Bavarian National Museum to the Bavarian State Archive. As part of a press event, two recently handed over to the main state archives of the National Museum from the period 1930 to 1950 were presented and explained. The journals are of central importance especially for provenance research – the research into the acquisitions of works of art. The written tradition of the Bavarian National Museum documents the long and eventful history of this institution as well as its collection and exhibition activities. King Maximilian II founded the National Museum in 1855. In 1867 the museum received a representative building in Maximilianstraße, which soon proved to be too small and inappropriate. The building still used today in the Prinzregentenstraße covered the National Museum in 1900. Through the agreement to be concluded, the historical tradition of the Bavarian National Museum is to be kept safely and reliably and made accessible to research. The Bavarian Archives Act is a legal basis. If the National Museum needs the documentation for its own purposes, for example for the preparation of an exhibition, for scientific research or in the course of its administrative activity, recourse is possible at any time. Already in 2019, the Bavarian National Museum handed over the two access journals to the Bayerischer Hauptstaatsarchiv. These documents are of great importance especially for provenance research, i.e. the exploration of the origin and the often interchangeable history of the works of art stored in museums and collections. For many years, the Bavarian National Museum has been particularly committed to the research of provenance as well as to the identification and return of cultural objects that have been withdrawn due to persecution. In the “Provenienzforschung Bayern” research association (https://provenienzforschungsverbund-bayern.de/) the Bavarian National Museum has a leading role. Other members of the research association include the Bavarian State Archives, the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek and the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen. Since the adoption of the Washington Declaration in 1998 and the corresponding commitment of the Federal Republic in the following year, Provenance research has gained considerable importance and scope. The result is an increasing demand for relevant documents in the state archives of Bavaria and especially in the Bavarian Main State Archives. Insufficient and much consulted stocks, which are already stored in the main state archive, are the compensation records of the Bavarian State Compensation Office, the asset control files of the Bavarian State Office for Asset Management and Recognition, the facts of the Bavarian Finance and of the Ministry of Culture. In addition, the collections of other culturally preserved institutions, such as the files of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek or of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, are included. The decision of the Bavarian National Museum to submit its documents also makes it possible to use these stocks centrally in the Bavarian Main State Archive. National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) complete

The NFDI represents an innovation in the German science landscape and aims to build a digital, regionally distributed and networked knowledge storage. It is intended to systematically develop valuable research data, which are often stored decentralized, project-like and temporary, as well as to make it readable, available and usable in the long term. It is composed of consortia in which different institutions of the respective research field cooperate, including infrastructure facilities such as the Bavarian State Archives. A knowledge store like the NFDI is the basis for attracting the world's best scientists. For the development and promotion of NFDI, the federal government and countries from 2019 to 2028 annually represent up to 90 million. Euro ready for final expansion, of which the federal government bears 90 percent, 10 percent bear the countries. Since 2020, the state archives of Bavaria are partners of the NFDI4Earth and the NFDI4Biodiversity. In November 2022, the Joint Science Conference (GWK) has incorporated eight other consortia into the federal state funding of the NFDI. The decision was based on a recommendation from the German Research Foundation (DFG). 09.11.2019: "Der Reichswald - Holz für Nürnberg und seine Dorf" - Exhibition at the Staatsarchiv Nürnberg

The State Archive Nuremberg shows from 9 November to 20 December 2019 the exhibition “The Nuremberg Reichswald – Wood for Nuremberg and its villages”. The exhibition was prepared by the State Archive Nuremberg together with the Franconian Freilandmuseum Bad Windsheim. Wood as an important and renewable raw material was already significant in the Middle Ages. 14th and 15th The city of Nuremberg secured the rights to the large forests around the city. Two “forest offices” were responsible for the administration, which controlled the wood consumption of the subjects. Not only the firewood cover was regulated, but also timber had to be applied. To save wood, more stone was used for building. The written delivery of the forest offices Lorenzi and Sebaldi in the state archive Nuremberg includes a total of 83 shelves. In the documents there are around 5,300 mostly coloured construction plans of farmhouses, stables and barns, fences, mills and furnaces from the 16th to the end of the 18th century. Century – a unique treasure in Germany. After several years of work, these files are now opened and all plans are digitized. The plans document the appearance and change of villages, mansions and mills in the “Old Landscape”. What is hidden from exciting stories behind the files of a rich city authority shows examples of black structures, unauthorized woodwork and the devastations of the Thirty Years War. In addition to files and the most beautiful plans, the exhibition features house models and typical woodworking tools from the collections of the Franconian Freeland Museum. 06.10.2021: Presentation of Dr. Klaus Rupprecht as new head of the Bamberg State Archive

On 5 October 2021, archive director Dr. Klaus Rupprecht became publicly a new head of the State Archives Bamberg presented. He took over this task as early as July 1, 2021 and followed archive director Dr. Christian Kruse, who moved to the State Archive Nuremberg as head of May 1, 2021. Dr. Christian Kruse led the Bamberg State Archive from 1 December 2018 to 30 April 2021. After studying history and German for the Magisterium at the Universities of Erlangen and Vienna, he received his doctorate in Erlangen with a work on “Franz Friedrich Anton von Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld 1750–1806”. He completed his training as a scientific archivist at the Bavarian Archive School in 1988 until 1991, after which he worked in the Bavarian Main State Archives, in the State Archives of Augsburg, Nuremberg and Munich and from 2008 to 2018 in the Directorate-General of the Bavarian State Archives. Dr. Klaus Rupprecht, a native of Upper Franconia, studied history, anglistics and social studies at the University of Bamberg for the Teaching Office of Gymnasium. He received his doctorate with a dissertation on the topic of “Ritterisches Fürstentruung in Franken. The history of Guttenberg in the late Middle Ages and at the beginning of the early modern period”. After his lecture on the scientific archivist at the Bavarian Archive School in 1993 to 1996, Klaus Rupprecht worked in the Bavarian Main State Archive in Munich, came to the Bamberg State Archives in 1997, where he was Deputy Head and Speaker for Disclosure and Stock Issues since 2000. Since 1 November 2016 he has been head of the state archive Würzburg. With his appointment to the head of the Bamberg State Archives, he returned to his roots.
