03.06.2019: "Joseph Ludwig Graf von Armansperg (1787–1853): Aristokrat, Liberal, Minister, Chancellor" - Teaching Exhibition at the Bavarian Main State Archive

On Monday, June 3, 2019, the opening of the small exhibition “Joseph Ludwig Graf von “Armansperg (1787–1853): Aristokrat, Liberal, Minister, Arch Chancellor” takes place in the Bavarian Main State Archive. The exhibition was launched in the course of training in the preparation service 2017/2020 for the entry into the 3rd Qualification level of the field of education and science, specialist focus on archives, at the University of Applied Sciences in Bavaria.

Joseph Ludwig Graf von Armansperg served four Wittelsbach kings as officials, ministers and advisors. He came from an old noble family of Lower Bavaria, which was raised to the Reichsfreiherrenstand in 1719. His career began as administrative officer under King Maximilian I. Joseph. King Ludwig I promoted him to the “Superminister” for finance and interior, later for finance, the royal house and exterior. As a “Sparmansperg” he refurbished the Bavarian state finances and set new standards in terms of transparency, accuracy and economy. At the end of his professional life, Armansperg became President of the Council of Regents and Chancellor of the Young Kingdom of Greece under King Otto. Armansperg spent his retirement as a landlord at Egg Castle near Deggendorf. During the revolutionary upheavals of 1848, King Maximilian II again sought Armansperg's advice on various questions.

To Joseph Ludwig von Armansperg, the state archives of Bavaria maintain a rich tradition. Personal documents and documents can be found in Estate Armansperg in the Bavarian Main State Archive. Documents from other branches of the family lie in the State Archives Munich (Family Archive Grafen von Armannsperg) and Country hat. Armansperg's work as state officials and ministers was reflected in the files of various Bavarian authorities.

About 30 objects were selected for the small exhibition, which illuminate the central stations of life and activity of Armanspergs. Documents, business writing, session logs, publications and private letters are complemented by contemporary paintings and lithographies. The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek and the King Otto Museum in Ottobrunn provided reproductions for the exhibition.

Today, among others, the Armanspergstraße in Münchner district Harlaching and the inscription of the Ottopillar in Ottobrunn remind Joseph von Armansperg. A compilation of these and other traces of memories round off the exhibition.

The exhibition is from 3. June to 16. July 2019 in the main building of the Bavarian Main State Archive (Treppenhaus, 1st OG), Schönfeldstraße 5, 80539 Munich.

Joseph von Fraunhofer in the opinion of his contemporaries and posterity

An exhibition at the Landshut State Archives, curated by Johanna Girschick, on display from February 10 to April 10, 2026 Joseph von Fraunhofer (1787-1826) was a Bavarian optician, inventor, and entrepreneur whose achievements in research are still relevant today. Born in Lower Bavaria, Fraunhofer combined exact science with application-oriented practice and discovered the Fraunhofer lines named after him. He was a member of several prestigious research institutions and enjoyed national and European renown. Honors from politics, society, and science attest to his special status. Streets in several German cities, buildings, stamps, an ICE train, and a research institution bear Fraunhofer's name. The exhibition at the Landshut State Archives marking the 200th anniversary of his death aims to raise awareness of Joseph von Fraunhofer in his home region of Lower Bavaria. It deals with the city of Straubing's approach to Fraunhofer in terms of historical memory and the 80-year struggle to erect a monument in his hometown. It becomes clear that Fraunhofer is viewed positively throughout history and in the present day. The approximately 30 exhibits come mainly from the Straubing City Archives. They are supplemented by items from the Bavarian Main State Archives and the archives of the Deutsches Museum in Munich, which holds Fraunhofer's estate. Reproductions are on display. The exhibition was developed as part of the 2021/2024 preparatory service training program for entry into the third qualification level of the education and science career path, with a focus on archiving, at the University of Public Service in Bavaria. 23.11.2022: Change of office in the State Archive Landshut

He follows archive director Dr. Martin Rüth, who retired in early October 2022. Dr. Martin Rüth studied German and History Gymnasium and received a PhD in Würzburg with a work on “The rise and spread of the humanist law firm in the municipal authorities of southern Tuscany and Umbria”. After training as a scientific archivist at the Bayerische Archivschule 1988 until 1991, he worked at the Staatsarchiv Landshut, whose head he has been managing since 18th. March 2005. In his term of office, the planning and construction of the new building of the Landshut State Archives was completed. Born in Lower Bavaria, Dr. Thomas Paringer studied Bavarian and General History, History and Church History in Munich and Rome. He received his doctorate with an institutional history work on the Upper and Lower Bavarian state levels in the Duchy of Bavaria. After his lecture on the scientific archivist at the Bavarian Archive School 2006 to 2008, Thomas Paringer first worked in the State Archive Munich before he first moved to the State Archive Landshut in 2010. As his deputy director, he organised, among other things, the transfer of the archives to the modern new building on Schlachthofstraße. In the spring of 2017 he moved to the Bavarian Main State Archive in Munich and took over the management of the department V Estates and Collections. As an instructor at the Bayerische Archivschule and the Bayerische Verwaltungsschule for newer constitutional and administrative history, he is intensively familiar with the Bavarian authorities structure. With the acquisition of the direction of the State Archive Landshut, he returns to his roots. The excerpt from the Trausnitz Castle into a modern archive building in 2016 was a cemetery for the Landshut State Archive. The new building offers all the conditions for managing the new tasks of the archives created by the digitalization of society and administration. In addition to the increasingly digital provision of sources, the acquisition of digital documents and their accessibility are key areas of work of the new head of office. In addition, the role of the State Archive Landshut as the centre of regional historical research is to be strengthened. Dr. Paringer strives for more intensive contacts with neighbouring universities, cultural institutions and historical associations. The state archive Landshut stores around 2.93 million archives in the amount of 20,150 meters (as at the end of 2021). It is responsible for the tradition of all modern state courts, central and sub-authorities based in the Lower Bavarian government district. Older documents – mainly in the form of documents, official books and files – originate from the administration of the Lower Bavarian part of the Duchy and Prince of Bavaria and from numerous nobility archives. 12.02.2022: Bayerisches Hauptstaatsarchiv takes over the family archive Bayrhammer

The Bavarian State Archive with the family archive Bayrhammer takes over the estates Gustl Bayrhammer and his father Max Bayrhammer. The family archive contains personal documents, awards and memorabilia of the actor dynasty Bayrhammer from 1870. This secures the written testimonies of this “artisticly ambitious family” (Gustl Bayrhammer) for the future and makes it accessible to research. Especially Gustl Bayrhammer (1922–1993), who was on 12. February 2022 would have become 100 years old, so far many are regarded as the epitome of the Bavarian folk actor. Like his father Max (1867–1942), he worked on many stages throughout the German-speaking world. To complement official tradition, the Bayerische Hauptstaatsarchiv secures estates of political and socially important personalities. The takeover of the family archive Bayrhammer takes place on the basis of a donation agreement on the basis of the public interest and the supra-regional importance of the subcontracted persons. Max Emanuel Bayrhammer on the 26th Born in Lower Bavaria in May 1867 as the son of a castle administrator. He took acting lessons and quickly found access to large stages, often with classic main roles. He performed at the Gardenerplatztheater Munich, the Stadttheater Wroclaw, the Weimarer Hoftheater, the Wiener Volkstheater or the Schauspielhaus Frankfurt. After the end of the First World War, the role offers became less, already from the early 1920s, he joined NSDAP fans as an entertainer and after 1933 at events of the NS organization “force through joy”. In precarious economic circumstances, he lasted only with a small doped stage contract at the Bavarian National Theatre on Water. His performances as the author of stage pieces are forgotten today. His 1922-born son Gustl (actually Adolph Gustav Rupprecht Maximilian) Bayrhammer first received a commercial training. After his convocation in the Wehrmacht, Gustl Bayrhammer used the stationing in Berlin for a theatre training at the Schiller Theatre under Heinrich George and Gustav Gründgens. After the end of the war, together with Toni Berger (1921–2005), he took a first engagement at the Hohenzollerische Landestheater Sigmaringen. There he also met his later wife, actress Irmgard Henning (1919–2003). After more than two decades on different stages (e.g. Augsburg, Karlsruhe, the Luisenburg Festival Wunsiedel and the Landestheater Salzburg), he went to Munich in 1967. Since then, he has been involved in the Munich Chamber Games, the Münchner Volkstheater and the Bayerische Staatsschauspiel. Gustl Bayrhammer became famous throughout the country through his TV career. As the first Bavarian investigator in the TV series "Tatort", he appeared in 15 episodes nationwide between 1972 and 1981. The television role with which it is most often associated across generations is that of the “master Eder” in the children’s series “Pumuckl”. In this international large production with at the time extremely elaborate trick drawings, he brilled as a sympathetic-grantian carpenter. Max and Gustl Bayrhammer made their own understanding of their performances as a theatre actor. The family archive is documented by special biographical documents: Gustl Bayrhammer led over each of his roles book. The recordings range from the first performance at Theater Sigmaringen on 27th. November 1945 until his last appearance on 21st January 1993 in Munich. This written information is accompanied by equally carefully designed photo albums. His father, on the other hand, collected the theatre records and stage programs of his performances, so that his professional path can also be well tracked. As a curiosity, the family archive contains a whole range of awards and honours such as the Bavarian Film Award, the Bambi, the Bavarian Order of Merit and even a Golden Record for the Pumuckl-Hörspiele. 22.02.2021: Who was Anastasia Anderson Manahan really?

Anastasia Anderson Manahan gained worldwide attention with her multi-filmed life history. The story of the young woman who allegedly escaped the shooting command of the Bolsheviks during the Russian Revolution as the only member of the tsar family and then hoped for general recognition in vain contained all elements of a modern tragedy. With the help of a DNA analysis on the mortal remnants of the Russian Zaren family, it was clear in 2007 that the youngest Zaren daughter was murdered together with her family. This proved that Anastasia Anderson Manahan was not the great-fearer Anastasia of Russia. For many years, friends and Plenipotentiaries from Anastasia Anderson Manahan's closest environment gathered written documents of all kinds that should prove that Anastasia was actually the daughter of the last Russian pair of fences. Thus, the so-called “Anastasia Archive”, which has now been handed over to the Bavarian Main State Archive for archiving. In addition to letters and correspondences with their supporters (many of them from high aristocratic circles), there are business documents that regulate the publishing and film marketing of their history. In addition, there are process documents and legal correspondences that document the struggle for recognition and the related legal claims over several decades. Insight into the personality structure of Anastasias give not least the wills written by her. In addition, the archive holds a variety of memories and testimony that should serve as evidence of the identity of Anastasia. With the acquisition of the estate of Anastasia Anderson-Manahan to the Bavarian Main State Archive, these documents find their final location in Bavaria, not far from Seeon in the district of Traunstein, where after their death on 12. February 1984 on the Orthodox part of the cemetery. She died in Charlottesville in the USA. The gravestone bears the years of life “1901-1984”, the name “Anastasia Manahan” in Latin and additionally the first name Anastasia in Cyrillic script. Also on the Seeoner cemetery are the tombs of relatives from the house of the dukes of Leuchtenberg. These were particularly closely connected to the Romanov's home after their origin and identity and initially acted as Anastasia's most important advocate. The Family archive Leuchtenberg has been stored in the Bavarian Main State Archive for many years.

19.02.2019: "On number safe! Protection of contents in the archive" - Teaching exhibition in the Bavarian Main State Archive

Archives are the memory of a society. They shall ensure that the archives kept by them are preserved, secured and kept permanently. Only, what means in the long term, secure and receive? What are the dangers and can archives be set and how can they be met? The small exhibition with about 35 exhibits shows, on the basis of selected examples, the dangers to which archival material can be exposed: from total loss through war, fire or theft, to partial damage caused by nager or insects, to targeted, unauthorized manipulation of content. In the second part, protection measures are introduced that apply archives and archivists yesterday and today for the preservation of the original and its contents: correct storage, pest management, certification and stapling, theft protections, standards and rules, copies and filming. The exhibition was opened in the course of training in the preparation service 2017/2020 for the entry into the 3rd Education and Science, specialized in archives, at the University of Applied Sciences in Bavaria. 22.-23.03.2019: 11. Bavarian Archive Day in Coburg - Bavarian Janus award to the Mayor of Augsburg Dr. Kurt Gribl

Archives, science and research have always been working closely together. In addition, archives understand themselves as service providers for the public and thus also for research. The digi-tal change today opens up new opportunities for cooperation on both sides, combined with new challenges. What are the ways in which the archives are to engage in cooperation with research? New paths are, for example, archives that use the narrowing of interested lay people within the framework of Citizen Science, but at the same time have to ask themselves about the limits of this form of cooperation. New Zealand also enters the cultural institutions that connect themselves to technology affinities and culture-enhancing communities within the framework of the cultural hackathon “Coding da Vinci”. And finally, can programs learn to recognize and read manuscripts independently and thus complement or even replace one of the core competencies of the historical aid sciences? The 11. Bayerische Archivtag, about 200 archivists from Bavaria and the neighbouring regions from 22 to 23. March 2019 in Coburg meet. King Ludwig II of Bavaria – Life, Traces, Myth

Ludwig II is still fascinated. No Bavarian ruler is known beyond the borders of his homeland. Declared and clapped as "March King", he draws millions of tourists every year into the castles Herrenchiemsee, Linderhof and Neuschwanstein. He has become an art figure behind which the historical personality almost completely disappears. But who was Ludwig II, and in what time did he live? bavaricon tries an answer in this virtual exhibition. Eleven short chapters and a level of deepening show Ludwig II in the world of 19. Century. 150 digital documents, photographs, paintings, documents and drawings provide information about the life and suffering(s) of the monarch and show you significant changes in the Kingdom of Bavaria. These include treasures of outstanding importance for Bavarian history, such as the Accession Treaty to the German Empire or the "Kaiserbrief" of 1870. Here you can visit the virtual exhibition!
