04.07.2019: Digital cultural mediation – “Small archival studies” unlocked by the state archives of Bavaria - online presentation of 100,000 digitized archives with a total of 3.5 million images on the homepage

As a new e-learning module on the homepage of the Bavarian State Archives, the 4th July 2019 at 10.00 a.m. the “Small Archives” presented and unlocked (https://www.gda. bayern.de/service/archivalienkunde/). The module Prof. Dr. Joachim Wild, Director of the Main State Archive a.D., has worked out the subject “Archival Studies” for 30 years at the Bavarian Archive School, the central educational institution for archivists in Bavaria.

Currently, the state archives of Bavaria store well 47 million originals from 777 to today. If you put all archives together, you could easily bridge the distance from Munich to Nuremberg. About the homepage and the finder database (https://www.gda.bayern.de/service/finding agent database/) are currently 100,000 archives Digitalisate available. Since most archives comprise several pages, this results in the fair number 3.5 million available images. These quantities already make it clear that any form of digital access to archives will always be a part of the written tradition of Bavaria. The focus is on the state archives of Bavaria, therefore, the digital collection of directories and development information. This information is not only available through the homepage, but is also fed via interfaces into important portals such as the Archive Portal D and from there into the EUROPEANA. Another focus is the digitization of audiovisual archives. Due to the shortevity of storage media such as film, video and CD, the total loss of information threatens here. Added to this is the digitization of selected backbone stocks and the provision of e-learning modules, which allow all groups of persons to familiarize themselves with archived goods and research them in the archive.

With the “Small archival studies” want to offer the Bavarian State Archives a quick entry into the archival source. All archival genres to be found in state archives are presented with an explanatory text and an illustration: from medieval documents, files and official books, posters, leaflets, photographs to digital documents. The new offer complements the already existing areas of “School Discover Archive” (https://www.gda.bayern.de/service/school-entdecke-archive orhttps://www.gda.bayern.de/kulturerbejahr) and Digital Writing (https://www.gda.bayern.de/DigitalPublicity/).

The ‘Digital font’ is a training platform for deciphering German and Latin manuscripts. Documents were handwritten for many centuries. Learning older fonts is therefore often the only way to use original sources. Automated text recognition also quickly reaches its limits in handwritten documents.

To European Year of Culture 2018 the module Discover Schools Archive: using concrete examples from the Middle Ages to the 20th century Century students are brought to historical traditions, to sources and thus to archives. The thematic blocks or individual presented archives can be integrated into school classes and are assistance and guidance for their own research. As archives, unlike libraries and museums, are not known to everyone, the tasks of the archives, their responsibilities, their use and the archivist profession are also presented.

It is a goal of the state archives of Bavaria, pupils and students to inspire archives and the cultural property stored there. Important building blocks on this path are the development of digital offers, research from the local PC and cooperation with schools, universities and other educational institutions. With the Universities Passau (Master's degree program "Historical Sciences") and Regensburg (“Public History and Cultural Education”) archivists want to generate added value and build networks directly with research.

After prior registration, the state archives offer housekeeping. History is to be made tangible and, above all, pupils of historical tradition are to be brought forward. The exhibitions presented in the context of historical-political educational work are gradually complemented by archive educational materials that are provided online.

Both for schools and for research institutions there is an offer to carry out teaching units in the state archives. In addition to knowing the institution archive, there is the possibility to work with source material. Archivists support the selection of suitable sources. As a citizen archive and child of democratic Bavaria, it is open to legal seekers, home and family researchers and is a guarantee of the rule of law and transparency. Due to its far-reaching stocks, it is also a focal point for scientific researchers from close and far. Here we can meet our past, trace our history back to the early Middle Ages and become aware of our common roots with our neighbouring countries. The main state archive is the central memory institution of the Free State of Bavaria. ‘ Before 16th. July 1921 and the regulation which established the Bavarian Main State Archives, there were central government archives in Bavaria. The history of these predecessor institutions dates back to the late Middle Ages. The oldest known directory from the archives of the Duchy of Bavaria-Munich dates back to 1438. With the foundation of the Bavarian Main State Archive, a central archive was created in Bavaria for the first time in a modern sense. The four state archive facilities in Munich were merged into an institution as departments: General Reichsarchiv, Secret State Archive, Secret House Archive and District Archive Munich. Writings of Bavarian authorities and courts, important documents on foreign affairs and even the archives of the royal house of Wittelsbacher, which reigned until 1918, were now united organizationally under one roof. However, until the spatial assembly of the individual departments, it took another 55 years. Only after the Second World War the Bayerische Hauptstaatsarchiv got its own building complex at the Ludwig and/or Schönfeldstraße with modern magazine construction. The construction of the Bavarian Main State Archive marks a fundamental change in the archival self-image. As a new guiding principle in the formation and demarcation of stocks, the principle of provenance prevailed, i.e. the preservation of the original context of origin, in contrast to the reorganization according to content (pertinencies). At the same time, the archives opened up beyond scientific research for home and family research and thus for all citizens. From the Treasury of the Kingdom of Bavaria, a memory and research institution committed to the rule of law and transparency becomes of international importance in the democratic free state. 26.09.2024: Presentation of the archive inventory “Staatsarchiv Coburg. Imperial Chamber Court (Bayerische Archivinventare 60)’

The Reichskammergericht (1495–1806) was, in addition to and in competition with the Reichshofrat (1498/1527–1806), one of the two highest dishes in the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. 01.05.2021: Change of office in the State Archive Nuremberg

With effect from 1. May 2021 will be archive director Dr. Christian Kruse with simultaneous promotion to Ltd. Archive director appointed as head of the State Archive Nuremberg. He follows Ltd. Archive Director Prof. Dr. Peter Fleischmann, who was appointed 31st January 2021 retired. Prof. Dr. Fleischmann has led the State Archive Nuremberg since 1 December 2012 and returned to the state archive Augsburg and the state archive Munich – in both state archives he had the lead in – to the state archive in which his professional activity began after his training at the Bavarian Archive School. On the occasion of the change of office, Bernd Sibler emphasised: “Archive bridges between our history and the present. Prof. Dr. Fleischmann has built numerous such bridges with his long-standing, dedicated work. With the refurbishment of the State Archives, he also initiated and accompanied a project that will now be one of the tasks waiting for his successor. I am very pleased that with Dr. Christian Kruse we welcome a new archive manager who brings a broad wealth of experience to lead the state archive into the future and thus preserve the memory of our country. ‘ Dr. Christian Kruse, born in Kiel, studied history and German at the universities of Erlangen and Vienna. He received his doctorate in Erlangen with a work on “Franz Friedrich Anton von Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld 1750–1806”. From 1991 to 2002 he worked in the Bavarian Main State Archives and from 2002 to 2007 in the State Archives of Augsburg and Nuremberg. From 2007 to 2008, he worked as a permanent representative of the Head of State Archives in Munich, from 2008 to 2018 he was responsible for archive building, stock conservation, publications and public relations in the Bavarian State Archives Directorate-General. He has been head of the Bamberg State Archive since 1 December 2018. The State Archive Nuremberg – apart from the effects of the Coronapandemy – has to cope with great challenges: its headquarters at the Nuremberg Archive Street 17 is refurbished, the offices were moved to Rollnerstraße 14 in 2020, the archives were stored in four locations (external office Lichtenau bei Ansbach, Staatsarchiv Augsburg, Staatsarchiv Landshut, Landeskirchliches Archiv der Evangelisch-Lutherischen Kirche in Bayern). The refurbishment of the State Archive Nuremberg – the first archive-purpose building of the Kingdom of Bavaria, built in 1880 – is expected to last until autumn 2026. 21.06.2022: Cooperation Agreement between the University of the Federal Armed Forces of Munich and the Directorate-General for State Archives of Bavaria signed

In June 2022, the President of the University of Bundeswehr Prof. Dr. Merith Niehuss, whose Vice President Prof. Dr. Uwe Borghoff and the Director-General of the State Archive Dr. Margit Ksoll-Marcon signed a cooperation agreement at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich. The aim is to co-operate the Institute of Software Technology and the datArena of the University of the Bundeswehr Munich with the state archives of Bavaria in data backup and long-term data storage. The contract includes the cooperation of the two institutions with the organization and support of student projects and internships in order to close students with forms, methods and instruments of archival information management, as well as to give insights into the field of archives and the challenges of digital long-term archiving. Focus: Recovering old records and long-term archiving The intention of the agreement is that both partners develop joint projects, scientific meetings and workshops. For this purpose, the stock of the Bavarian State Archives can be used for research purposes by students and lecturers of the Institute for Software Technology. Research projects as well as project or master's work are intended primarily to restore and interpret older data stocks of the Bavarian State Archives, document formats and digital long-term storage and long-term preservation. Software solutions that can be created in research and used for the purposes of archiving are released for use by the State Archives. “The cooperation with the state archives is of particular importance for the University of the Bundeswehr Munich and the work in the datArena. This gives our researchers access to authentic and historically valuable data material as well as close personal contacts to internationally identified experts of long-term digital archiving,” explains Prof. Dr. Borghoff. Dr. Ksoll-Marcon said: “Enge contacts to the Institute of Software Technology at the University of the Bundeswehr have existed for many years and are intensified by this cooperation. The aim is to make research data readable and usable and to further develop the necessary technologies." The datArena: A forum of encounter The signing of the cooperation agreement took place in the new premises of the datArena on the grounds of the University of the Bundeswehr Munich. The datArena is a teaching, research and exhibition centre that conveys between technical, cultural and social history and will also offer researchers, students and the public a forum for encounters. The datArena was founded jointly by Prof. Dr. Borghoff and John G. Zabulitzky. At present, a move on the grounds is completed. In addition to valuable, technology-historical, representative electronic computers, the datArena houses a software archive of international rank and one of the largest collections of historical digital media. Since the software and media can be used on functional devices from the respective era, historical software and digital documents can be brought back to life. Thus, datArena offers an excellent infrastructure for research in the field of digital long-term archiving and preservation of digital cultural heritage. In conjunction with the datArena, courses and internships of the Bayerische Archivschule will be organized and conducted in the future.

03.06.2019: "Joseph Ludwig Graf von Armansperg (1787–1853): Aristokrat, Liberal, Minister, Chancellor" - Teaching Exhibition at the Bavarian Main State Archive

On Monday, June 3, 2019, the opening of the small exhibition “Joseph Ludwig Graf von “Armansperg (1787–1853): Aristokrat, Liberal, Minister, Arch Chancellor” takes place in the Bavarian Main State Archive. The exhibition was launched in the course of training in the preparation service 2017/2020 for the entry into the 3rd Qualification level of the field of education and science, specialist focus on archives, at the University of Applied Sciences in Bavaria. Joseph Ludwig Graf von Armansperg served four Wittelsbach kings as officials, ministers and advisors. He came from an old noble family of Lower Bavaria, which was raised to the Reichsfreiherrenstand in 1719. His career began as administrative officer under King Maximilian I. Joseph. King Ludwig I promoted him to the “Superminister” for finance and interior, later for finance, the royal house and exterior. As a “Sparmansperg” he refurbished the Bavarian state finances and set new standards in terms of transparency, accuracy and economy. At the end of his professional life, Armansperg became President of the Council of Regents and Chancellor of the Young Kingdom of Greece under King Otto. Armansperg spent his retirement as a landlord at Egg Castle near Deggendorf. During the revolutionary upheavals of 1848, King Maximilian II again sought Armansperg's advice on various questions. To Joseph Ludwig von Armansperg, the state archives of Bavaria maintain a rich tradition. Personal documents and documents can be found in Estate Armansperg in the Bavarian Main State Archive. Documents from other branches of the family lie in the State Archives Munich (Family Archive Grafen von Armannsperg) and Country hat. Armansperg's work as state officials and ministers was reflected in the files of various Bavarian authorities. About 30 objects were selected for the small exhibition, which illuminate the central stations of life and activity of Armanspergs. Documents, business writing, session logs, publications and private letters are complemented by contemporary paintings and lithographies. The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek and the King Otto Museum in Ottobrunn provided reproductions for the exhibition. Today, among others, the Armanspergstraße in Münchner district Harlaching and the inscription of the Ottopillar in Ottobrunn remind Joseph von Armansperg. A compilation of these and other traces of memories round off the exhibition. The exhibition is from 3. June to 16. July 2019 in the main building of the Bavarian Main State Archive (Treppenhaus, 1st OG), Schönfeldstraße 5, 80539 Munich.
