Around 200 archives of Bavarian Jewish communities and rabinates have been held in the Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People (CAHJP) held in Jerusalem. These documents are important and widely used sources for all historical research on Jewish history in Bavaria and Germany. The accessibility of stocks via the Internet has therefore long been an urgent wish for local and regional research. On the initiative of the commissioner of the Bavarian State Government for Jewish life and against anti-Semitism, for remembrance work and historical heritage and with generous financial support by the Bavarian State Ministry for Science and Art, these documents have been digitized with the CAHJP since 2023 in a cooperation project of the Bavarian State Archives. The aim is to open a free online access to all documents about the finder database of the Bavarian State Archives. With 30 digitized municipal archives and more than 100,000 digital images, an important milestone is achieved in this major project running until 2028. Most of the 19th Centuries already offer fascinating insights into the diverse history of Judaism in Franken, Schwaben and the Upper Palatinate. The scope of the individual municipal archives is very different. Many stocks consist of only a few files, others of 200, some sometimes even more than 500 archives. The Jewish community of Fürth, one of the oldest and most important Bavarians, forms the most extensive stock with over 1,000 files. Many other documents from the collections of the Bavarian State Archives, which convey Jewish life in Bavaria from the Middle Ages to the present, as well as the impasseous persecution in the time of National Socialism, come to this tradition of the communities themselves. Especially in times when Jewish life is once again threatened in Germany and worldwide, it is important to provide authentic testimonies and documents with low thresholds for historical-political education and cultural mediation. Prof. Dr. Michael Brenner Owner of the Chair of Jewish History and Culture at the Historical Institute of Ludwig Maximilians University Munich (e.g. American University, Washington, D.C.), in his lecture focuses on the importance of the written tradition of the Jewish communities of Bavaria. The lecture will include a panel discussion on key research and mediation issues: How can this unique treasure be used in documents in future in historical-political educational work? What are the evaluation options available? Where are the points of contact for mediation in museums, archives, schools and universities? 01.05.2021: Change of office in the State Archive Nuremberg

With effect from 1. May 2021 will be archive director Dr. Christian Kruse with simultaneous promotion to Ltd. Archive director appointed as head of the State Archive Nuremberg. He follows Ltd. Archive Director Prof. Dr. Peter Fleischmann, who was appointed 31st January 2021 retired. Prof. Dr. Fleischmann has led the State Archive Nuremberg since 1 December 2012 and returned to the state archive Augsburg and the state archive Munich – in both state archives he had the lead in – to the state archive in which his professional activity began after his training at the Bavarian Archive School. On the occasion of the change of office, Bernd Sibler emphasised: “Archive bridges between our history and the present. Prof. Dr. Fleischmann has built numerous such bridges with his long-standing, dedicated work. With the refurbishment of the State Archives, he also initiated and accompanied a project that will now be one of the tasks waiting for his successor. I am very pleased that with Dr. Christian Kruse we welcome a new archive manager who brings a broad wealth of experience to lead the state archive into the future and thus preserve the memory of our country. ‘ Dr. Christian Kruse, born in Kiel, studied history and German at the universities of Erlangen and Vienna. He received his doctorate in Erlangen with a work on “Franz Friedrich Anton von Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld 1750–1806”. From 1991 to 2002 he worked in the Bavarian Main State Archives and from 2002 to 2007 in the State Archives of Augsburg and Nuremberg. From 2007 to 2008, he worked as a permanent representative of the Head of State Archives in Munich, from 2008 to 2018 he was responsible for archive building, stock conservation, publications and public relations in the Bavarian State Archives Directorate-General. He has been head of the Bamberg State Archive since 1 December 2018. The State Archive Nuremberg – apart from the effects of the Coronapandemy – has to cope with great challenges: its headquarters at the Nuremberg Archive Street 17 is refurbished, the offices were moved to Rollnerstraße 14 in 2020, the archives were stored in four locations (external office Lichtenau bei Ansbach, Staatsarchiv Augsburg, Staatsarchiv Landshut, Landeskirchliches Archiv der Evangelisch-Lutherischen Kirche in Bayern). The refurbishment of the State Archive Nuremberg – the first archive-purpose building of the Kingdom of Bavaria, built in 1880 – is expected to last until autumn 2026. The State Archive Nuremberg has approximately 8.2 million archives totaling 36.8 km in its storage. 01.07.2022: New office management in the state archive Coburg

Dr. Johannes Staudenmaier M.A. was effective from 1. July 2022 interimist to the head of State Archives Coburg ordered. He follows Dr. Alexander Wolz M.A., who has been the State Archive since the 21st. December 2017 and was transferred to the state archive Würzburg on 1 September 2021. Johannes Staudenmaier, a native of Munich, studied new history, political sciences and old history at the universities of Bamberg, Madrid and Vienna. He earned his doctorate in the early modern administrative and legislative history of the Hochstifts Bamberg. From 2010 to 2012, Johannes Staudenmaier completed the Bayerische Archivschule in Munich as a lecturer and subsequently worked in the state archives Nuremberg and Bamberg. The State Archive Coburg preserves 419,665 archives of 4.3 km. It is responsible for the archives of the state authorities and courts located in the district-free city of Coburg and in the district of Coburg, even if their jurisdiction extends beyond the territory of the district. The historical tradition extends to the former Duchy of Saxony-Coburg and its forerunners or to the Free State of Coburg, which emerged after the dissolution of the Staff Union of Saxony-Coburg and Gotha in 1919, until its integration into the Free State of Bavaria in 1920. 24.09.2020: "Fabrikkinderarbeit in Bayern im 19. Jahrhundert" - Lehrausstellung im Bayerischer Hauptstaatsarchiv

On the occasion of World Children's Day will be on Tuesday, 24. September 2019, the small exhibition "Fabrikkinderarbeit in Bayern" in the Bavarian Main State Archive in 19th Century’ open. The exhibition was opened in the course of training in the preparation service 2017/2020 for the entry into the 3rd Education and Science, specialized in archives, at the University of Applied Sciences in Bavaria. Employment of under 14-year-olds in Bavaria totaled 19. A century of reality, such as crafts and services, but above all in agriculture. Since the beginning of industrialization, children have also been employed as cheap workers in factories, including bricks. The exhibition highlights this chapter of Bavarian economic and social history among the questions: What sources give information about factory child labour in Bavaria? How high was the number of children employed in Bavarian factories? In which regions, cities and industries were children used in factories? What were typical activities, how were working hours and working conditions? What were health consequences of factory child labour? How did you try to arrange work and schooling? What reward did children receive for their work? How did the state and politics and various social groups such as parents, employers, doctors, educators and churches judge the factory work of children? The exhibits are exhibited chronologically – the first section extends from the 1830s, when the first factories were created in Bavaria, until the foundation of the German Reich, and the second section focuses on the time after the foundation of the Reich. This division corresponds to legal competence: Until 1870, the Kingdom of Bavaria was able to regulate child labour independently on its territory, after which laws and regulations of the German Reich were applied in Bavaria. In principle, the employment of children in factories was 19. century the first and only form of child labour, which was gradually regulated and restricted by the state. This did not mean a ban. In 1903, the German Reichstag passed a general Children's Protection Act, of which agricultural child labour was excluded. In general, child labour in the Federal Republic of Germany was prohibited only by the Youth Employment Protection Act of 1960. 29.4-1.10.2024: The Penzberger Pechkohlenbergwerk. The last years of an era (1954/56–1966)

From 29. April 2024 is the small exhibition “The Penzberger Pechkohlenbergwerk. The last years of an era (1954/56–1966)” in the city archive Penzberg. The exhibition was developed as part of the current archiving training for the 3rd level of qualifications at the University of Applied Sciences in Bavaria (HföD). Looking back to the past, it is clear that the search for mineral raw materials has a long tradition. Mining is particularly important. The spectrum of raw materials obtained ranges from precious stones and uranium to salts and ores to coal. Coal is mainly used as fossil fuels. Even Oberbayern was not too long ago characterized by a certain type of coal: the pitch coal. This type of coal originated in the tertiary age. As a result of the folding of the Alps and the resulting tectonic stress due to pressure and temperature, the pitch coal solidified to such an extent that it clearly belongs to the brown coal, but optically resembles the coal. It was built in Bavaria in the Penzberg, Hausham, Peiting, Peißenberg and Marienstein mines. The exhibition takes a look at the depreciation of pitch coal in the Upper Bavarian small town of Penzberg in the district Weilheim-Schongau. The focus is on modernising the mine during the last years of operation. Despite the most modern technology, however, shutdown was no longer to be stopped – the pitch coal could not withstand the cheaper mineral oil as an energy carrier. The path of coal in the modernized mine is explained in detail from the seam to the mountain neck. 25-27.09.2024: »Future-ready? Data quality and data security in museum and archive«

This year, the EDV days are dedicated to the spectrum of data quality and data security in museum and archives. Successful development, preservation and research of cultural goods is only possible in the long term on the basis of high-quality specialist information, whose lasting protection can only be ensured by appropriate systems and strategies. Data quality and data security play an essential role in museum and archive work. On the one hand, in the case of the EDV days 2024, we illuminate specific possibilities for generating technically improved, deepening and thus future-oriented development data, for example by data qualification or the use of controlled vocabulary. On the other hand, the conference will focus on current challenges in the field of data security, which are becoming increasingly relevant in view of the digital transformation processes. Information security and data protection are also indispensable in museums and archives. Two practical workshops complete the programme. 14.10.2019: Establishing an emergency network of Bamberger Archives, Libraries and Museums

Director-General of the State Archives, Dr. Margit Ksoll-Marcon, Mayor of the City of Bamberg, Mr Andreas Starke, General Vicar of the Archdiocese of Bamberg, Monsignore Georg Kestel, President of the Otto-Friedrich University of Bamberg, Prof. Dr. habil. Godehard Ruppert, and the head of the Bamberg State Library, Ms. Library Director Prof. Dr. Bettina Wagner, signed on 14. October 2019 in the City Archive Bamberg the agreement for mutual support of Bamberger Archives, Libraries and Museums in emergencies (“Notfallverbund Bamberg”). The agreement includes: joint trainings and exercises, the preparation and exchange of emergency plans, and the permanent exchange of those responsible with each other and with external partners such as the fire department and the technical aid. For the hopefully never-ending emergency, the institutions provide mutual support to bundle resources and to ensure faster and more effective recovery and initial supply of the affected archives, books and exhibits. For the institutions involved, the protection of the cultural goods they hold against fire, water, external violence or other unpredictable events is one of the most important tasks. The past has shown that the staff of the individual institutions are often overwhelmed without external assistance, which has shown impressively large disasters such as the Elbhochwasser 2002, the fire in the Weimar Anna-Amalia-Bibliothek 2004 or the collapse of the historical archive of the city of Cologne 2009. The Bamberg emergency association, established by the signing of this agreement, expressly invites the representatives of other cultural institutions in the Bamberg city area to cooperate in the future.
