12. Bavarian Archive Day from 24 to 25 March 2023 in Passau with the award “The Bavarian Janus 2023”.

Digitization changes our vitality in a fundamental way. Work and business processes, but also private contacts are hardly conceivable without the help of computers, smart phones and network access. Statements such as “the data must run, not the citizens” also place the expectation horizon for public institutions.

Archives are twice affected by this change. On the one hand, they are self-sufficient to reconfigure their business processes and services to the electronic mode of operation. On the other hand, it is the task of the archives to take over digital documents from all institutions and departments for which they are responsible. For archives, this represents a huge balancing act, because it has to do with a variety of electronic procedures and with different data formats, on which they often have little influence.

The Bayerische Archivtag will show that the information technology in the archive has long since touched on all tasks. IT specialist applications play an indispensable role from cooperation with the donors and the acquisition of the archived goods, its development and access to permanent archiving.

But where does this path lead? What does the change mean for the functioning of the archives? What impact does he have on the self-understanding of archives and on their social role? What are the expectations of the archives? Questions like this are already addressed by Prof. Dr. Malte Rehbein (University of Passau), whose topic is: “Archive and Democracy: About Research in the Digital Transformation”.

Beyond the working sessions, the Bayerische Archivtag serves the meeting and exchange. The employees of the Adels- und Privatarchive, the municipal archives, the church archives, the archives at universities and scientific institutions as well as the municipal archive maintainers meet for joint meetings on the day before.

On the evening of March 24th, the President of Lower Bavaria, Mr Rainer Haselbeck, will give the “Bayerische Janus 2023” in the Passau Town Hall. The winner is Helmut Käs, Head of the BMW Group Classic, who is responsible for the company archive of the Bayerische Motorenwerke. The award recognises the exemplary services in building and setting up the corporate archive. Modern and comfortable user services and a wide-ranging public relations work characterize the company archive. This plays an equally important role in the memory work of the BMW Group, whose focus is also on the shadow sides of the company's history, in particular the employment of forced laborers in the NS period.
The prize, a bronze sculpture that refers to the double-headed Roman god Janus and thus symbolizes the median position of the archives between past and future, has been created by the artist Leopold W. Hafner from Aicha in front of the forest.
