24/25. March 2025: 13th Bavarian Archive Day in Augsburg - Following: Download Presentations

The two working sessions of this year’s Bayerische Archivtag were dedicated to the theme “Archive Access as a Program”. March 2025 various questions concerning the search and accessibility of archived goods: How can archive users win permanently? How does the practice of making archives accessible? What is to be taken into account from a legal point of view in the online presentation of findables? What experiences have been gathered with the online accessibility in practice? And: How could a virtual reading room of the future look like?

5.11.2019: 1st CEC workshop on the BKM funding lines to preserve the written cultural property

On 5 November, a workshop was held by the Directorate-General of the Bavarian State Archives and the coordinating body for the preservation of the written cultural property (KEK). The content and aim of the event was to exchange and provide information on all issues of promoting consistent projects for written culture through the Coordination body for the preservation of the written cultural property (KEK). 14.04.2021: 3. Internationaler Tag der Provenienzforschung

Die Staatlichen Archive Bayerns haben sich am 14. April 2021 am Tag der Provenienzforschung beteiligt. Pandemiebedingt fand der vom Arbeitskreis Provenienzforschung veranstaltete 3. Tag der Provenienzforschung am 14.4.2021 rein virtuell statt. Der Forschungsverbund Provenienzforschung Bayern (FPB), zu dessen Gründungsmitgliedern die Generaldirektion der Staatlichen Archive Bayerns gehört, beteiligte sich mit einem reichhaltigen ganztägigen Veranstaltungsprogramm. Den Auftakt machten in der Vormittagssektion die Staatlichen Archive Bayerns mit vier Vorträgen zu den Quellen, die Provenienzforscher*innen in den acht Staatsarchiven und dem Bayerischen Hauptstaatsarchiv zur Verfügung stehen. Nach einer allgemeinen Vorstellung des Forschungsverbundes durch Dr. Johannes Gramlich (Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen), übernahm Dr. Julian Holzapfl (Staatsarchiv München) die Moderation. Er erklärte zunächst allgemein Funktion und Aufbau der staatlichen Archive und führte dann in seinem Vortrag „Provenienzrecherche am Staatsarchiv München – Bestände, Suchstrategien und Service“ in die im Staatsarchiv München verfügbaren Quellen ein. Maria Stehr (Bayerisches Hauptstaatsarchiv), übernahm diese Einführung für die Bestände des Hauptstaatsarchivs. Dr. Laura Scherr (Generaldirektion der Staatlichen Archive Bayerns) setzte fort mit einem Kurzvortrag über die Bedeutung des im Staatsarchiv Würzburg verwahrten Bestandes „Gestapostelle Würzburg“ für die Provenienzforschung sowie die Maßnahmen, die für den Originalerhalt dieses wichtigen Bestandes getroffen wurden. Den Vortragsreigen beendete Gerhard Fürmetz (Bayerisches Hauptstaatsarchiv) mit seinen Ausführungen zu „Jüdische Standesregister aus Bayern – Überlieferung, Digitalisierung, Quellenwert“. Das Nachmittagsprogramm bestritten die im Forschungsverbund Provenienzforschung vertretenen Museen und Sammlungen sowie das Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte. Alle Angebote wurden von einem wechselnden Publikum sehr engagiert wahrgenommen und lockten zwischen 40 und 150 Teilnehmer*innen vor die Bildschirme. 24.-25.03.2023: Total digital! Challenges and Strategies for Archive Practice

12. Bavarian Archive Day from 24 to 25 March 2023 in Passau with the award “The Bavarian Janus 2023”. Digitization changes our vitality in a fundamental way. Work and business processes, but also private contacts are hardly conceivable without the help of computers, smart phones and network access. Statements such as “the data must run, not the citizens” also place the expectation horizon for public institutions. Archives are twice affected by this change. On the one hand, they are self-sufficient to reconfigure their business processes and services to the electronic mode of operation. On the other hand, it is the task of the archives to take over digital documents from all institutions and departments for which they are responsible. For archives, this represents a huge balancing act, because it has to do with a variety of electronic procedures and with different data formats, on which they often have little influence. The Bayerische Archivtag will show that the information technology in the archive has long since touched on all tasks. IT specialist applications play an indispensable role from cooperation with the donors and the acquisition of the archived goods, its development and access to permanent archiving. But where does this path lead? What does the change mean for the functioning of the archives? What impact does he have on the self-understanding of archives and on their social role? What are the expectations of the archives? Questions like this are already addressed by Prof. Dr. Malte Rehbein (University of Passau), whose topic is: “Archive and Democracy: About Research in the Digital Transformation”. Beyond the working sessions, the Bayerische Archivtag serves the meeting and exchange. The employees of the Adels- und Privatarchive, the municipal archives, the church archives, the archives at universities and scientific institutions as well as the municipal archive maintainers meet for joint meetings on the day before. On the evening of March 24th, the President of Lower Bavaria, Mr Rainer Haselbeck, will give the “Bayerische Janus 2023” in the Passau Town Hall. The winner is Helmut Käs, Head of the BMW Group Classic, who is responsible for the company archive of the Bayerische Motorenwerke. The award recognises the exemplary services in building and setting up the corporate archive. Modern and comfortable user services and a wide-ranging public relations work characterize the company archive. This plays an equally important role in the memory work of the BMW Group, whose focus is also on the shadow sides of the company's history, in particular the employment of forced laborers in the NS period. The prize, a bronze sculpture that refers to the double-headed Roman god Janus and thus symbolizes the median position of the archives between past and future, has been created by the artist Leopold W. Hafner from Aicha in front of the forest. 23.06.2021: BKM Support lines for the preservation of written cultural goods: Practical questions of the CEC application

On 23. In June 2021, an online workshop was held by the Directorate-General of the State Archives of Bavaria and the coordinating body for the preservation of the written cultural property (KEK). For ten years, the Federal Ministry of Culture (BKM) has been supporting the original preservation in Germany (https://www.kek-spk.de/start. In the special programme of KEK, conservation measures such as mass depletion, dry cleaning, packaging, restoration and development of concepts and methods (e.g. damage detection) are promoted. The CEC's budgetary approach for funding in 2021 (end of application phase: 31.1.2021) amounts to 3.5 million euros. For Bavarian archives, the Directorate-General of the Bavarian State Archives is the central professional body for the coordination of applications. All Bavarian archives – regardless of the institution – are advised in the submission of applications, the applications are coordinated in terms of content and subject matter, and are passed on to the Bavarian State Ministry for Science and Art for counter-drawing. The application is forwarded to the CEC by the Ministry. Applications may also be made for the coming year 2022 by the end of January 2022. In order not to get into time difficulties, the preparation of the application should be started in autumn 2021 at the latest. In order to comply with the deadlines, the Directorate-General shall require applications up to 10.12.2021. In order to facilitate the preparation of applications, an online workshop of the Directorate-General for State Archives of Bavaria was held on 23.6.2021 in cooperation with the CEC. The workshop was very well attended with a total of 62 participants. After an introductory lecture by Dr. Ursula Hartwieg on the tasks of KEK and the two possible funding lines, Dr. Laura Scherr explained the course of the application in Bavaria. In three practical reports, various ongoing or already completed projects from municipal and church archives were presented. Matthias Haupt, Stadtarchivar von Wasserburg, recounted the model and special projects carried out in the municipal archives since 2011. The very structured and planned procedure in the Stadtarchiv Wasserburg – installation of a damage disaster, cleaning and restoration of the usability of archivia of the Old Archive of the City of Wasserburg on the basis of the catastrophe, packaging and conservation of the photo collection – enabled participants, in addition to important insights into project management, a compressed journey through methods of archival conservation. Johannes Untermarzoner, responsible for the archive and library of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising, reported on the projects carried out in archive and library. In addition to dry cleaning and packaging, the ore diocese also focuses on the planned installation of a damage disaster for targeted processing and planning of necessary conservation measures. Stephanie Goethals from the Aschaffenburg City and Stiftsarchiv finally gave a look at a direct object-related procedure which would like to plan for smaller archives that are targeted without the installation of a damage disaster conservation project. 27.01.2021: "XArchiv – Automation and Standardization in Digital Archiving"

On 27.01.2021 an online workshop of the Directorate-General for State Archives with 185 participants took place. On 27.01.2021, the workshop “XArchiv – Automation and Standardization at the Digital Archiving” of the Directorate-General of the Bavarian State Archives took place. In eight articles (the lecture by Dr. Maria Schramm had to fail), archivists from various archive sectors presented best practices of automated acquisition, validation, ingestion, structuring, logging and development of electronic information. As expected, the workshop met great interest of the specialist community and of science. 185 participants from archives, libraries, universities, public authorities and research institutions in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Czech Republic discussed the challenges, limits and deside rate of standardization and automation in long-term electronic archiving and their importance for building a national research data infrastructure. Presentations of lectures, one Workshop Report and the written contributions will be published gradually here. The texts are also published in Archive in Bavaria, volume 12 published. Digitization is omnipresent – especially in the cultural sector. At the EDV-Tags 2020, we want to deal with issues of digitalization of analogue cultural goods that affect museums and archives alike. Livestream from the House of Bavarian History - Museum Regensburg Knowledge transfer plays an important role in museums and archives. In documentation, communication, presentation and not least in research, it is crucial to preserve, trad and translate content, methods and competencies into new technologies. At the EDV days 2021, we illuminate various facets of modern knowledge transfer in cultural institutions: from digital infrastructure and networking to direct exchange with visitors. 7.-8.12.2022: Guidelines for National Uniform Archiving of Geobase Data

Review of the meeting of the joint working group of survey and archive administrations of the Federal and Länder. Official geobase data describe the earth's surface and its structure and serve as a basis for numerous specialist applications. They are of enormous and lasting importance for the administration itself, for science and research, but also for the individual interests of many citizens. For the long-term archiving and long-term readability of these data, new guidelines have been drawn up over the past three years by a joint working group of surveying and archive administrations of the Federal and Länder. These Guidelines for the nationwide uniform archiving of geobase data were presented at a scientific meeting on 7/8.12.2022, discussing requirements and requirements of science in the context of a national research data infrastructure (NFDI). The lectures were of great interest in science, administration and libraries and archives and showed possibilities and deside rate of long-term archiving and reusability of geobase data. 28.11.2019: Archive in the Old Reich as instruments of domination

Publication of the Lectures on the 2nd Archive Science Special Discussion of the Bavarian State Archives on 28 November 2019 in Munich in AZ 98/2022. Archives were not always open sites of research. In the times of the old empire before 1800, and still in part beyond, they were rather considered as places that were subject to access restrictions. The documents, official books and files stored in them secured legal and domination titles and documented processes from the innermost circle of the rulers. In times when the social order was based on privileges and property titles, archives were therefore regarded as treasury chambers and rulers.
