The General Directorate of the Bavarian State Archives is subordinate to the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts. It oversees the nine state archives. The General Directorate is the specialist authority for archiving in the Free State of Bavaria.
It is responsible for all fundamental and cross-sectional tasks relating to the state archives. This includes the management and coordination of central specialist tasks such as the evaluation, acquisition, organization, and cataloging of archive material according to uniform principles, preservation, IT, public heraldry, and historical and political education (e.g., exhibitions and publications).
The General Directorate appoints the archivists.
The Bavarian Archive School is located there. It is the competent authority for the training of specialist employees for media and information services, specializing in archives (at the public archives in Bavaria).
The General Directorate coordinates the teaching of registry and archiving at the Bavarian School of Administration.
