Bavarian Archive School

The Bavarian Archive School in Munich is the centre of archival training in Bavaria. Their history begins in 1821 with the establishment of a “Archival Education Institute” at the Royal General Reichsarchiv. It is not an independent authority or service and is therefore not mentioned either in the Bavarian Archives Act or in the Regulation on the breakdown of the Bavarian State Archives of 28.5.1990.

Approval, training and examination for the specialized area of archives in the field of education and science are regulated for all levels of qualification by: Ordinance on the speciality of Archiving (FachV-Arch) of 3 January 2014 (BayRS 2038-3-1-9-I/K, GVBl. p. 7).

Fourth Level of Qualifications, Course of Education and Science, Specialist Focus on Archives (formerly Higher Archive Service))

The next preparatory service for the fourth level of qualification begins expected in autumn 2027.

The start is expected to be posted in the Bayerische Staatsanzeiger at the beginning of 2027, indicating the admission requirements, the proofs to be submitted and the application deadline.

Third Level of Qualification, Course of Education and Science, Specialist Focus on Archives (former Observatory Service)

The Graduate degree archivist on the University of Applied Sciences in Bavaria in the Netherlands.

The next preparation service for the third level of qualifications begins expected in autumn 2028.
The admission to the preparatory service must be preceded by the participation in the special selection procedure, which is Bavarian National Staff Committee (LPA) is carried out.
You can only register online with the LPA for this selection procedure.

The Selection procedure for the recruitment year 2028 in 2027 carried out.

Admission requirements are proof of Latinum or secured Latin knowledge.


Second level of qualification, vocational training and science, specialized focus (former Intermediate Archive Service)

The next preparatory service for the second level of qualification begins expected in autumn 2027.

The admission to the preparatory service must be preceded by the participation in the special selection procedure, which is Bavarian National Staff Committee (LPA) is carried out.

All of the above-mentioned training courses qualify graduates for entry into public service. They are completed on a civil service basis and are revocable. Applicants must not have reached the age of 45 at the time of recruitment and must be German citizens within the meaning of Article 116 of the Basic Law or citizens of another member state of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland.
