Mission Statement of the Bavarian State Archives
The Bavarian State Archives create an open source for historical research of today and tomorrow
According to scientific methods, we evaluate documents of state bodies and assume those of permanent value in our tradition. In addition, we collect private archives where public interest exists. As a result, we continuously expand the memory memory memory of the state and society and contribute to the transparency of state action and thus to the rule of law and democratic opinion.
The Bavarian State Archives contribute to legal certainty
We preserve documents of permanent legal significance and thus secure legal claims of the Free State of Bavaria, its citizens and people affected by state action in Bavaria.
The state archives of Bavaria receive written cultural goods authentic and durable
Archivgut is cultural property of total social value. It must therefore be sustained and future generations made available in a reliable and credible form. Against material and technical decay processes, we take appropriate measures to preserve the substance in order to preserve unique and irreplaceable documents of historical action unadulterated.
The state archives of Bavaria open access to the history of this country and its people
Through the development, provision and digitization of archived goods, we create diverse access to the information stored therein. We thus enable a direct confrontation with written evidence of the past. These can thus be transformed into new knowledge and made socially usable.
The state archives of Bavaria support the efficiency and functioning of state and administration even in times of digital transformation
As a partner of judiciary and administration, we support and advise state bodies in the preservation and management of their documents and actively contribute to the digitization of state and administration. As part of the separation, we help relieve the registratures and thus promote the economic viability of administrative trade. We provide archived documents to the submitting bodies as needed and thus ensure legal certainty and administrative continuity.
The Bavarian State Archives promote a rich and diverse archive landscape
We understand ourselves as part of a living archive community – in Bavaria, Germany and beyond. We make a contribution to the diversity and performance of archives of other public and private institutions, catering and practical assistance.
The Bavarian State Archives are actively engaged in the confrontation with our history
As a bridge builder between past, present and future, we ourselves convey knowledge of past times on the basis of the source treasure entrusted to us. We are actively involved in research, historical-political education and freedom-democratic identity formation in state and society.
The Bavarian State Archives are a service-oriented, open and cooperative partner of science and research
We understand ourselves as part of the network of culture-maintaining memory institutions and the numerous actors from science and research. We introduce our competencies and services in cooperation to increase the social benefits of the archived goods we hold.
