5.-27.03.2022: BlogSlam zum Tag der Archive 2022 - "Facts, Stories, Curioses" - #Tag derArchive

Underhttps://archivebay.hypotheses.org we present exciting and curious contributions from Bavarian archives during the promotion period. Die Münchner contributions appear on the cooperation blog “Archive in Munich” under https://amuc.hypotheses.org. Presenting the Tag Archives Archive their diverse social functions. Many hundred archives usually open their doors to citizens. But the pandemic has radically changed life and work. This year hardly any events around the day in presence are possible. While changing into the digital space, the immediate impressions of an archive management are missing. At the same time, a digital approach opens up new possibilities, for example the bayern-wide networking with a common blogSlam. A BlogSlam introduces all archive divisions into the rich fundus of original cultural goods. A BlogSlam is a temporary blog action with limited participants. The model is Poetry Slams and Science Slams. The term normally refers to a lecture contest. At the end of our BlogSlam, however, no winners are awarded, but exciting stories and curious content are collected. Join the blogSlam on the Tag Archives: Archive of the Academy of Fine Arts Munich Archive of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Archive of the labor movement of Munich Archive of the Bavarian Landtag Archive of Bayerischer Rundfunk Archive of the German Alpine Association Archive of the German Museum Archive for Christlich-Soziale Politik der Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung Archive Geiger Archive and Library of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising Bavarian State Archive Bavarian Economic Archive German Red Cross - Search Service Forum Queeres Archive Historical archives of UniCredit Bank AG House of Art - Historical Archive Institute of Contemporary History - Archive Monacensia in Hildebrandhaus State Archive Amberg State Archive Bamberg State Archive Coburg State Archive Landshut State Archive Munich State Archive Würzburg State Archive Nuremberg City archive Bamberg City Archive Munich Technical University of Munich - TUM Archive University Archive Bamberg

17.07.2024: State Archives as a resource for provenance research

17.07.2024: State Archives as a resource for provenance research

Within the framework of the practical seminar, the most important traditions are presented at the central government level (in the Bavarian Main State Archive) and in the regional area (exemplarily in the State Archive Munich). Provenance research serves to develop object and collection biographies and thus contextualizes the origin of an object. Although the object itself is initially examined, it is usually not enough to determine who the (art) work has heard in the course of time without doubt. In addition to museum documents such as sales books, files and official books are often indispensable in public archives in order to reconstruct the provenance. Many of these documents do not use the object, but are used for persons who have been deprived of assets. Within the framework of the practical seminar, the most important traditions are presented at the central administrative level (in the Bavarian Main State Archive) and in the regional area (exemplarily in the State Archive Munich) – from the tax and withdrawal files of the NS authorities to the reparation files from the post-war period to relevant documents of the ministries and large museums such as the Bavarian State Painting Collections. In practical exercises, research strategies are to be communicated. Comments on the legal framework and the terms of use in the Bavarian State Archives round off the event. Referencing Maria Stehr M. A.is an expert in enquiries from provenance researchers in the department II New holdings of the Bavarian Main State Archive, Robert Bierschneider performs the same function in the State Archive Munich. Gerhard Fürmetz M. A. leads the Department II of the Bavarian Main State Archives and is an expert in the field of overdelivery as well as in the presentation and evaluation of relevant archives. event in the Bavarian Main State Archive and the State Archive Munich, Schönfeldstr. 5 and 3 in 80539 Munich, the Wednesday, 17th July 2024, from 09:30 to 16:00. 14.3.-4.4.2023: Cannon bells. Bell seizure and restoration in Bavaria 1917–1922

The 14th. March 2023 became the small exhibition “Glocken zu Kanonen. Bell seizure and restoration in Bavaria 1917–1922” opened in the Bavarian Main State Archive. The exhibition was developed as part of the current archiving training for the 3rd level of qualifications at the University of Applied Sciences in Bavaria (HföD). Bells have shaped our everyday life as a clock generator for centuries. In their ornamental and sound art, they testify not only to the worship of God and the saints, but also to the craftsmen of their founders. In the First World War, about one third of the Bavarian bells were crushed and melted to cover the metal requirements of the armaments industry. Despite these massive losses, the “Glockenland Bayern” succeeded better than other countries of the German Reich to preserve its bell stock as far as possible and in particular to preserve historical bells from destruction. The exhibition is dedicated to the processes and actors of bell events during the First World War in Bavaria. Finally, the question of state compensation or restoration of bells after the end of the war. The exhibits originate mainly from the collections of the Bavarian Main State Archives, the city archives Augsburg and Rosenheim have provided digitalisate. accompanying exhibition is a leaflet available on this page under 'Family files' and under https://www.gda.bayern.de/publikationen/lehrausstellungen-der-bayerischen-archivschule/ available for download. The exhibition can be visited from 14 March to 4 April 2023 in the Bavarian Main State Archives (Treppenhaus, 1st OG), Schönfeldstraße 5, 80539 Munich. Opening hours: Monday to Thursday 8.30 – 18.00, Friday 8.30 – 13.30. Guided tours for groups can be found under oeffentigkeitsarbeit@gda.bayern.de to be agreed. Posted on 13. March 2023

08.04.2019: "Revolution – The transition from the monarchy to the Republic in the Würzburg 1918/19" - joint exhibition of the State Archives and City Archives Würzburg

A hundred years ago a revolution in Bavaria ended the monarchy. Some revolutionaries tried to establish a socialist rebel audience. In Würzburg, councillorship was particularly noticeable. At the beginning of April 1919, the Würzburg residence, at the time as it is now the headquarters of the State Archives, was the venue of the twelve-member Revolutionary Action Committee (RAA) and thus the centre of the revolutionary event. This three-day domination in the residence from 7 to 9 April 1919 is the focus of the exhibition on time. The exhibition will include the logbook of the Action Committee delivered in an act of the Prosecutor's Office, as well as a variety of posters and leaflets. With posters and leaflets, the revolutionaries tried to control the mood in the city and to inform the population about the events. In view of contradictory instructions of the Munich councils and the Bamberger Exile government was often insulted outside the larger cities, showing files from the under-French state council offices. After three days, the Würzburger Räterepublik was militaryly terminated by an association of soldiers, students and citizens. The main players of the Würzburger Räterepublik were sentenced to the Landgericht Würzburg (Local Court). From now on, communists and Spartakists were considered the main drivers of young democracy. In the NS period, many followers of the sub-French epublics and their family members were monitored and persecuted, as the files of the Gestapostelle Würzburg document the members of the RAA chair Georg Friedrich Hornung. The exhibition was prepared by the State Archive Würzburg together with the City Archive Würzburg and was already on display in the City Archive in November 2018. It is now shown in the state archive in the Würzburg residence – extended by original documents from the collections of the state archive Würzburg. The exhibition is from 9 April to 7 June 2019 the Foyer des Staatsarchiv Würzburg, Residenzplatz 2 (residence, north wing), 97070 Würzburg (closed on all holidays). The entrance is free. Opening hours: Mo–Mi 8.00–16.00, Do 8.00–20.00, Fr 8.00–13.30. Guided tours for groupn can be booked free of charge at Tel. 0931/355 29-0; Email: poststelle@stawu.bayern.de Posted on: 08.04.2019

Second life in book covers and file folders – a journey through time with parchment and paper waste

Second life in book covers and file folders – a journey through time with parchment and paper waste

An exhibition by the Department of Archival and Library Science at the University of Public Service in Bavaria, curated by Amelie Knittel On display from February 10 to March 7, 2026, at the Bavarian Main State Archives. The reuse of used items is not a modern phenomenon: people have been recycling and upcycling since ancient times. In the 17th century, parchment was reused for envelopes, early printed materials were used as book spines, and after World War II, people often wrote on the back of already printed paper. The exhibition takes visitors on a brief journey through the various ways in which parchment and paper were reused in an administrative context and the curiosities that arose as a result. Around 20 exhibits from the Bavarian Main State Archives and the Munich State Archives illustrate in particular the nature of the reprocessing, the circumstances surrounding this process, and the contents of the items that were given a second life. On display from February 10 to March 7, 2026, in the main building of the Bavarian Main State Archives, 1st floor, Schönfeldstraße 5, 80539 Munich. Opening hours: Monday to Thursday 8:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Friday 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Closed on Shrove Tuesday, February 17, 2026. Special opening for Archives Day on Saturday, March 7, 2026.   Admission is free.   Click here for the exhibition catalog. Signing of the Cooperation Agreement

21.06.2022: Cooperation Agreement between the University of the Federal Armed Forces of Munich and the Directorate-General for State Archives of Bavaria signed

    21. In June 2022, the President of the University of Bundeswehr Prof. Dr. Merith Niehuss, whose Vice President Prof. Dr. Uwe Borghoff and the Director-General of the State Archive Dr. Margit Ksoll-Marcon signed a cooperation agreement at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich. The aim is to co-operate the Institute of Software Technology and the datArena of the University of the Bundeswehr Munich with the state archives of Bavaria in data backup and long-term data storage. The contract includes the cooperation of the two institutions with the organization and support of student projects and internships in order to close students with forms, methods and instruments of archival information management, as well as to give insights into the field of archives and the challenges of digital long-term archiving. Focus: Recovering old records and long-term archiving The intention of the agreement is that both partners develop joint projects, scientific meetings and workshops. For this purpose, the stock of the Bavarian State Archives can be used for research purposes by students and lecturers of the Institute for Software Technology. Research projects as well as project or master's work are intended primarily to restore and interpret older data stocks of the Bavarian State Archives, document formats and digital long-term storage and long-term preservation. Software solutions that can be created in research and used for the purposes of archiving are released for use by the State Archives. “The cooperation with the state archives is of particular importance for the University of the Bundeswehr Munich and the work in the datArena. This gives our researchers access to authentic and historically valuable data material as well as close personal contacts to internationally identified experts of long-term digital archiving,” explains Prof. Dr. Borghoff. Dr. Ksoll-Marcon said: “Enge contacts to the Institute of Software Technology at the University of the Bundeswehr have existed for many years and are intensified by this cooperation. The aim is to make research data readable and usable and to further develop the necessary technologies." The datArena: A forum of encounter The signing of the cooperation agreement took place in the new premises of the datArena on the grounds of the University of the Bundeswehr Munich. The datArena is a teaching, research and exhibition centre that conveys between technical, cultural and social history and will also offer researchers, students and the public a forum for encounters. The datArena was founded jointly by Prof. Dr. Borghoff and John G. Zabulitzky. At present, a move on the grounds is completed. In addition to valuable, technology-historical, representative electronic computers, the datArena houses a software archive of international rank and one of the largest collections of historical digital media. Since the software and media can be used on functional devices from the respective era, historical software and digital documents can be brought back to life. Thus, datArena offers an excellent infrastructure for research in the field of digital long-term archiving and preservation of digital cultural heritage. In conjunction with the datArena, courses and internships of the Bayerische Archivschule will be organized and conducted in the future.

28.09.2022-08.01.2022: The Prince Bishop moves into town - The beginnings of the Würzburg Residence 300 years ago

The 300. Jubilee of the laying of the foundation stone of the Würzburger Residenz on 22. May 1720 dedicate State Archive Würzburg and Bavarian administration of state castles, gardens and lakes a small exhibition. The exhibition, which was planned for the anniversary year 2020, had to be postponed several times due to the Corona-Pandemie and can therefore be seen with two years delay in the rooms of the Würzburg residence. The Würzburg residence is a building of European rank. As a baroque professional building from a cast, it is a world cultural heritage. Its magnificent equipment came from the need for representation, the consciousness of power and the "Baufieber" of the Würzburger Fürstbischöfe from Schönborn. Thanks to their contacts, the most influential architects of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation planned and worked on the construction of the residence, among them Johann Dientzenhofer and the previously unknown engineering officer Balthasar Neumann. The foundation stone laying on 22 May 1720 is the starting point of the exhibition on building history. The stations illuminate the planning and construction of the residence until its inauguration. The artists, architects and craftsmen involved in the construction are presented more closely. Another striking light is directed at the polite life in Würzburg according to the reference of the residence through the court state. 30 exhibits from the collections of the state archive Würzburg as well as some lenders from other facilities (Museum für Franken, Staatsarchiv Bamberg). The Bavarian administration of the state castles, gardens and lakes participates with several large portrait paintings by prince bishops from Schönborn. The exhibition is from 28.
