25-27.09.2024: »Future-ready? Data quality and data security in museum and archive«

This year, the EDV days are dedicated to the spectrum of data quality and data security in museum and archives.

Successful development, preservation and research of cultural goods is only possible in the long term on the basis of high-quality specialist information, whose lasting protection can only be ensured by appropriate systems and strategies. Data quality and data security play an essential role in museum and archive work.

On the one hand, in the case of the EDV days 2024, we illuminate specific possibilities for generating technically improved, deepening and thus future-oriented development data, for example by data qualification or the use of controlled vocabulary. On the other hand, the conference will focus on current challenges in the field of data security, which are becoming increasingly relevant in view of the digital transformation processes. Information security and data protection are also indispensable in museums and archives. Two practical workshops complete the programme.

The lectures on Thursday and Friday will be held in parallel Livestream transfer. The workshops are excluded on Wednesday. The stream is freely accessible via the EDV tags website. When registering for the live stream, the link will be sent to you by email a few days before the event.

Revolution and Räterepubliken in Bavaria 1918/19

100. Birthday of the Free State presented bavaricon the exciting and dramatic history of its beginnings in a virtual exhibition. Five chronological sections and a level of deepening bring you closer to the Revolutionary Years 1918/19. The focus is on the events in the capital Munich, which were decisive for all Bavaria. In addition, the various developments are included in ten other locations of Altbayerns, Frankens and Schwabens. 90 high-calibre exhibits from archives, libraries and museums show you the decisive changes and changes of this time – with all their breakthrough achievements, but also the problematic accompanying phenomena and consequences. 15.4.2024: New construction for the state archive Würzburg in Kitzingen

Bavaria’s building minister Christian Bernreiter, represented locally by Ministerial Director Ingrid Simet, expressed his congratulations: “Modern archival work requires modern spaces, because despite digitization, the storage of archived goods is indispensable. I am therefore pleased that the work is on the cost and timetable. ‘ Director-General of the State Archives, Dr. Bernhard Grau, expressed great joy in his greeting that the State Archive for Lower Franconia in Kitzingen receives an architecturally impressive service building that fully meets the high demands of modern archive construction. He stressed the importance of the new building for the historical tradition of Unterfranken and pointed out that the oldest document in state ownership will be preserved here in Kitzingen in future. Spatial engraving for the construction project was in May 2023, the completion of the building is planned for the end of 2025, the state archive is expected to commence its operation at the new site at the end of 2026. 14.3.-4.4.2023: Cannon bells. Bell seizure and restoration in Bavaria 1917–1922

The 14th. March 2023 became the small exhibition “Glocken zu Kanonen. Bell seizure and restoration in Bavaria 1917–1922” opened in the Bavarian Main State Archive. The exhibition was developed as part of the current archiving training for the 3rd level of qualifications at the University of Applied Sciences in Bavaria (HföD). Bells have shaped our everyday life as a clock generator for centuries. In their ornamental and sound art, they testify not only to the worship of God and the saints, but also to the craftsmen of their founders. In the First World War, about one third of the Bavarian bells were crushed and melted to cover the metal requirements of the armaments industry. Despite these massive losses, the “Glockenland Bayern” succeeded better than other countries of the German Reich to preserve its bell stock as far as possible and in particular to preserve historical bells from destruction. The exhibition is dedicated to the processes and actors of bell events during the First World War in Bavaria. Finally, the question of state compensation or restoration of bells after the end of the war. 13th Archives Day “Old Home - New Home,” early March 2026

Every two years, the Association of German Archivists (VdA) calls for a nationwide “Archives Day.” Most events take place on the weekend of March 7-8, but some take place earlier. This year, Archives Day will focus on the theme of “Old homeland – new homeland,” but many other topics will also be covered. Among Bavaria's state archives, the Amberg State Archives (presentation already on March 4), the Bavarian Main State Archives, and the Coburg, Landshut, and Munich State Archives will be participating with events on Saturday, March 7. The Augsburg State Archives will take part in “Augsburg open” from May 7 to 10, 2026, and the Bamberg State Archives will hold an open house on June 12. 20.07.2020-30.12.2020: "100 Years of Coburg near Bayern"

The exhibition shows what development the Coburger Land took during its belonging to Bavaria. First stations are dedicated to the period of the Weimar Republic and National Socialism. One focus is on the period after World War II. Although the inner German border is clamped on three sides, Coburg developed positively after 1945. Agriculture and industry modernized, tourism and large construction projects changed the cityscape. Through the municipal territorial reform and the regular celebrations to merge with Bavaria, Coburg continued to grow into Bavaria. Finally, the German unit changed the political map fundamentally in 1989/90 and opened a number of new possibilities for Coburg. 22.02.2021: Who was Anastasia Anderson Manahan really?

Anastasia Anderson Manahan gained worldwide attention with her multi-filmed life history. The story of the young woman who allegedly escaped the shooting command of the Bolsheviks during the Russian Revolution as the only member of the tsar family and then hoped for general recognition in vain contained all elements of a modern tragedy. With the help of a DNA analysis on the mortal remnants of the Russian Zaren family, it was clear in 2007 that the youngest Zaren daughter was murdered together with her family. This proved that Anastasia Anderson Manahan was not the great-fearer Anastasia of Russia. For many years, friends and Plenipotentiaries from Anastasia Anderson Manahan's closest environment gathered written documents of all kinds that should prove that Anastasia was actually the daughter of the last Russian pair of fences. Thus, the so-called “Anastasia Archive”, which has now been handed over to the Bavarian Main State Archive for archiving. In addition to letters and correspondences with their supporters (many of them from high aristocratic circles), there are business documents that regulate the publishing and film marketing of their history. In addition, there are process documents and legal correspondences that document the struggle for recognition and the related legal claims over several decades. Insight into the personality structure of Anastasias give not least the wills written by her. In addition, the archive holds a variety of memories and testimony that should serve as evidence of the identity of Anastasia. With the acquisition of the estate of Anastasia Anderson-Manahan to the Bavarian Main State Archive, these documents find their final location in Bavaria, not far from Seeon in the district of Traunstein, where after their death on 12. February 1984 on the Orthodox part of the cemetery. She died in Charlottesville in the USA. The gravestone bears the years of life “1901-1984”, the name “Anastasia Manahan” in Latin and additionally the first name Anastasia in Cyrillic script. Also on the Seeoner cemetery are the tombs of relatives from the house of the dukes of Leuchtenberg. These were particularly closely connected to the Romanov's home after their origin and identity and initially acted as Anastasia's most important advocate. The Family archive Leuchtenberg has been stored in the Bavarian Main State Archive for many years.

21.06.2022: Cooperation Agreement between the University of the Federal Armed Forces of Munich and the Directorate-General for State Archives of Bavaria signed

21. In June 2022, the President of the University of Bundeswehr Prof. Dr. Merith Niehuss, whose Vice President Prof. Dr. Uwe Borghoff and the Director-General of the State Archive Dr. Margit Ksoll-Marcon signed a cooperation agreement at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich. The aim is to co-operate the Institute of Software Technology and the datArena of the University of the Bundeswehr Munich with the state archives of Bavaria in data backup and long-term data storage. The contract includes the cooperation of the two institutions with the organization and support of student projects and internships in order to close students with forms, methods and instruments of archival information management, as well as to give insights into the field of archives and the challenges of digital long-term archiving. Focus: Recovering old records and long-term archiving The intention of the agreement is that both partners develop joint projects, scientific meetings and workshops. For this purpose, the stock of the Bavarian State Archives can be used for research purposes by students and lecturers of the Institute for Software Technology. Research projects as well as project or master's work are intended primarily to restore and interpret older data stocks of the Bavarian State Archives, document formats and digital long-term storage and long-term preservation. Software solutions that can be created in research and used for the purposes of archiving are released for use by the State Archives. “The cooperation with the state archives is of particular importance for the University of the Bundeswehr Munich and the work in the datArena. This gives our researchers access to authentic and historically valuable data material as well as close personal contacts to internationally identified experts of long-term digital archiving,” explains Prof. Dr. Borghoff. Dr. Ksoll-Marcon said: “Enge contacts to the Institute of Software Technology at the University of the Bundeswehr have existed for many years and are intensified by this cooperation. The aim is to make research data readable and usable and to further develop the necessary technologies." The datArena: A forum of encounter The signing of the cooperation agreement took place in the new premises of the datArena on the grounds of the University of the Bundeswehr Munich. The datArena is a teaching, research and exhibition centre that conveys between technical, cultural and social history and will also offer researchers, students and the public a forum for encounters. The datArena was founded jointly by Prof. Dr. Borghoff and John G. Zabulitzky. At present, a move on the grounds is completed. In addition to valuable, technology-historical, representative electronic computers, the datArena houses a software archive of international rank and one of the largest collections of historical digital media. Since the software and media can be used on functional devices from the respective era, historical software and digital documents can be brought back to life. Thus, datArena offers an excellent infrastructure for research in the field of digital long-term archiving and preservation of digital cultural heritage. In conjunction with the datArena, courses and internships of the Bayerische Archivschule will be organized and conducted in the future.
