NFDI logo

National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) complete

The NFDI represents an innovation in the German science landscape and aims to build a digital, regionally distributed and networked knowledge storage. It is intended to systematically develop valuable research data, which are often stored decentralized, project-like and temporary, as well as to make it readable, available and usable in the long term. It is composed of consortia in which different institutions of the respective research field cooperate, including infrastructure facilities such as the Bavarian State Archives. A knowledge store like the NFDI is the basis for attracting the world's best scientists.

For the development and promotion of NFDI, the federal government and countries from 2019 to 2028 annually represent up to 90 million. Euro ready for final expansion, of which the federal government bears 90 percent, 10 percent bear the countries. Since 2020, the state archives of Bavaria are partners of the NFDI4Earth and the NFDI4Biodiversity.

In November 2022, the Joint Science Conference (GWK) has incorporated eight other consortia into the federal state funding of the NFDI. The decision was based on a recommendation from the German Research Foundation (DFG).

The following consortia will be funded from March 2023:

• NFDI4BIOIMAGE - National Research Data Infrastructure for Microscopy and Image Analysis,

• NFDI4Immuno - National Research Data Infrastructure for Immunology,

• FAIRagro - FAIRe data infrastructure for agrosystem research,

• NFDIxCS - National Research Data Infrastructure for and with Computer Science,

• Base4NFDI - basic services for the NFDI.

The Federal Government and the Länder are convinced that the eight consortia of the third and thus the last round of funding will complement the 19 consortia selected in the previous rounds in a very good way.

21.04.2022: Olympic posters from the poster collection of the Bavarian Main State Archive available online

Itotal of 90 posters for Olympic Games from 1964 to 1972 are over finder database of the Bavarian State Archives available online. These include four recently acquired event packages of the ecclesiastical services among the Olympic summer games in Munich. The concept of “Heitere Spiele” included a separate, modern and colored picture language. This idea followed – besides the signs of the sports facilities – public work and advertising material. Especially the posters still provide a good insight into the concept at that time. There are various series at the Olympic posters: posters to Olympic individual disciplines, art posters of renowned artists and advertising posters for the cultural and ecclesiastical accompanying program. For example, the great orchestra and ballet companies of the world appeared during the games in Munich. These official poster series were created on behalf of the International Olympic Committee as organisers, which also manages the rights of use. A few additional posters refer to other accompanying events such as an exhibition by the Bavarian National Museum. The poster collection of the Bavarian Main State Archive contains over 50,000 posters. 16.08.2021: Change of office in the state archive Würzburg

With effect from September 1, 2021, archive council Dr. Alexander Wolz M.A. is appointed as head of the state archive Würzburg. He follows archive director Dr. Klaus Rupprecht, who joined the Bamberg State Archive as head of July 1, 2021. Alexander Wolz, who grew up in Kitzingen, studied history, folk studies and political sciences at the University of Würzburg. The state archive Würzburg is the state authority for all questions of archives in the government district of Unterfranken. On Monday, June 3, 2019, the opening of the small exhibition “Joseph Ludwig Graf von “Armansperg (1787–1853): Aristokrat, Liberal, Minister, Arch Chancellor” takes place in the Bavarian Main State Archive. The exhibition was launched in the course of training in the preparation service 2017/2020 for the entry into the 3rd Qualification level of the field of education and science, specialist focus on archives, at the University of Applied Sciences in Bavaria. Joseph Ludwig Graf von Armansperg served four Wittelsbach kings as officials, ministers and advisors. He came from an old noble family of Lower Bavaria, which was raised to the Reichsfreiherrenstand in 1719. His career began as administrative officer under King Maximilian I. Joseph. King Ludwig I promoted him to the “Superminister” for finance and interior, later for finance, the royal house and exterior. As a “Sparmansperg” he refurbished the Bavarian state finances and set new standards in terms of transparency, accuracy and economy. At the end of his professional life, Armansperg became President of the Council of Regents and Chancellor of the Young Kingdom of Greece under King Otto. Armansperg spent his retirement as a landlord at Egg Castle near Deggendorf. During the revolutionary upheavals of 1848, King Maximilian II again sought Armansperg's advice on various questions. To Joseph Ludwig von Armansperg, the state archives of Bavaria maintain a rich tradition. Personal documents and documents can be found in Estate Armansperg in the Bavarian Main State Archive. Documents from other branches of the family lie in the State Archives Munich (Family Archive Grafen von Armannsperg) and Country hat. Armansperg's work as state officials and ministers was reflected in the files of various Bavarian authorities. About 30 objects were selected for the small exhibition, which illuminate the central stations of life and activity of Armanspergs. Documents, business writing, session logs, publications and private letters are complemented by contemporary paintings and lithographies. Today, among others, the Armanspergstraße in Münchner district Harlaching and the inscription of the Ottopillar in Ottobrunn remind Joseph von Armansperg. Written discounts of individuals are of considerable importance for the cultural memory of the state or society. Cooperation of the State Archives of Bavaria with the Arolsen Archives

The detention centre in Munich-Stadelheim acted as a “central detention centre” in the Nazi justice system and is one of the main places of the Nazi injustice in Munich with over 1000 known executions by 1945. The 844 so-called execution files of the JVA München-Stadelheim, which have been stored in the State Archive Munich since 1975, contain more than 50 unsubscribed letters from execution candidates to particularly close persons. The then prison administration and the detention centres held these letters back. The execution files are freely accessible to all scientific and private research projects, the distortion information is available online via the Finder database of the State Archives of Bavaria. In order to take account of the particular importance which the execution files or the suicide letters of the executed still have, as sources of history for the NS injustice, but also as personal evidence for the descendants of the executed, the files were systematically checked, digitized and the original letters mentioned were identified. The Arolsen Archives are the international centre of Nazi persecution with the world's most comprehensive archive on the victims and survivors of National Socialism. They specialize in tracking the biographical traces of NS victims up to their relatives living today. In the case of execution victims from Munich-Stadelheim, these traces lead not only to German, but above all to Polish and French families. The aim of the cooperation agreed in April 2025 is the networking of the files of the State Archive Munich with the transfer of Arolsen Archives to 17.5 million victims of National Socialism. The Arolsen Archives will try to identify addressees of the suicide note and other survivors of the executed, to contact them and to hand them copies of the original letters on request. The project is accompanied by a conciliation campaign and public events. This connects the letters beyond the existing free archival accesses. 23.07.2021: Bavarian Janus 2021 award in Passau

Friday, 23. In July 2021, Mr Bernd Sibler, MdL, Dr. Rolf-Dieter Jungk, head of office of the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and Art, presented the Bavarian Janus 2021 at Passau City Hall. The “Bayerische Janus” for special merits about the archives is usually awarded within the framework of the Bayerische Archivtage, which, however, was postponed to 2023 due to the pandemic. The Roman god Janus with his double face stands as guardians of doors and gates for the past and future. It symbolizes the archives that keep historical sources of the past for the future. This year the prize goes to Mr. Magister Petr Hubka, Director of the Pilsen/Plzeň State Archive a. D. Mr. Mag. Hubka is the decisive force of the now more than ten years of collaboration between Bavarian and Czech archives. In several projects, the state archives from Bavaria and Bohemia have the source platform “Porta fontium” (www.portafontium.eu) created. Historical documents from the archives of both countries are brought together in digital form and thus new impetus for cross-border historical research. The common platform is equally well accepted by citizens of both countries. Thanks to Mr Mag's commitment. 24.09.2020: "Fabrikkinderarbeit in Bayern im 19. Jahrhundert" - Lehrausstellung im Bayerischer Hauptstaatsarchiv

How did the state and politics and various social groups such as parents, employers, doctors, educators and churches judge the factory work of children? The exhibits are exhibited chronologically – the first section extends from the 1830s, when the first factories were created in Bavaria, until the foundation of the German Reich, and the second section focuses on the time after the foundation of the Reich. This division corresponds to legal competence: Until 1870, the Kingdom of Bavaria was able to regulate child labour independently on its territory, after which laws and regulations of the German Reich were applied in Bavaria. In principle, the employment of children in factories was 19. century the first and only form of child labour, which was gradually regulated and restricted by the state. This did not mean a ban. In 1903, the German Reichstag passed a general Children's Protection Act, of which agricultural child labour was excluded. In general, child labour in the Federal Republic of Germany was prohibited only by the Youth Employment Protection Act of 1960.
